Fabia Est (09) 1.9TDi poor MPG

Featured Replies

Thanks for reading - I'm a long time reader but first time poster so please be gentle :)

This is my 3rd skoda Fabia Estate (diesel with 67K on clock) and have always got 60mpg+ (using the brim to brim calculation) on my drives.

I have a chilled driving style always looking well ahead so i can maximize efficiency.

My drive consists of a 17 mile journey 14 of which is spent on a dual carriageway religiously at 70MPH using the cruise control and the last 3 miles are between 30-40mph.

Ever since i got my cambelt changed at 59K my mpg has dropped to around 50mpg :( so ive gone from doing 600 to a tank to maybe 500.

I've just had a major service as well which had the filters changed etc however.

Now ive had the timing checked by another garage and the VAG codes read and they're all normal, but im struggling to see how i can suddenly loose so much economy.

Anyone have any pointers please? I'm seriously thinking of defecting.

TIA

Any whoosy/hissing noises from the engine?

Any black smoke when accelerating hard?

Ill get the missus to rev it while ive got my head in the engine bay.

Will report back later .

thanks.

Welcome to the forum.

How many miles had you covered getting 60 mpg with this car before the cambelt change @ 59,000 miles.

Was that all that was done,

or did you change the Oil brand / spec, Air Filter, the tyres or anything else that can account for higher fuel consumption?

Ive done 30K+ prior to the belt change changed the two rear tyres for one of a slightly softer compound (its not as stable in high speed corners) but thats it.

Nothing else has changed.

Thanks

Any black smoke when accelerating hard?

Dont PD's always smoke abit when you floor em?

Our T5 does

A little smoke is normal yes (can actually only see smoke out the back of mine in the dark in the headlights of the car behind) but visible black smoke is not normal.

My Mpg on my 1.9 tdi sport has recently dropped and I'm wondering if it's due to the temperature drop over these last few months???

I seemed to easily get 60+mpg Aug - sept time but now I'm only seeing low to mid 50's with general driving and 60's if I'm super light with the pedal.

I was wondering if fuel suppliers put additives into fuel for the colder months which would contribute to the fuel quality being not as good ?? I may be talking complete nonsense so feel free to correct my thoughts lol.

My HTP seems a little down on fuel economy the past few weeks too.

Not sure why? It is due a service on 1k miles, not sure if thats related.

Maybe the time of year?

My fuel economy hasn't dropped :notme:

Well no smoke from the exhaust under heavy acceleration in any gear whether warm or cold.

No hissing or other odd noises from under the bonnet.

I've had the car since 33K and have always managed 60-65mpg every tank as stated my journeys are mainly spent around 60-70mph on motorways (14 miles each way).

Dont know what else to suggest now really, can a clogged EGR valve make so much difference or is it likley to be something else.?

Thanks in advance.

At the moment I`m seeing my worst mpg I have seen on my 1.6tdi. I put it down to winter tyres, winter diesel and slower engine warm up times. Maybe this years winter diesel has more antifreeze?

I think I will check my tyre presures today.

Good idea on checking tyre pressures, and also Air Filter.

?

Have you had a cold winter yet or colder than a normal winter.

The Spec of Diesel that is distributed this winter is no different from other winters, you pay for the energy fuel can produce and then Duty and Tax on Duty.

The Haulage Industry would be up in arms if Heavy Oil was different this year from previous years.

*Winter Spec Diesel & Petrol distributed from Mid October in Scotland and North of England, maybe later further south, and until March.*

I have heard of this problem before after a cam belt change, timing has been altered was it done at a reputable garage with the appropriate tools & knowledge? take it back & get them to check!
