Googling around, looking for a solution to an electric problem (which I'll post elsewhere) I ran into Briskoda.

I am Dutch but I now live in Beerse, Belgium, about 30 km East of Antwerp. I own an Octavia Combi SLX TDI, which I purchased in Mladá Boleslav when I was living in Prague, three years ago. It was three months old and had run 5000 km as a factory demonstration vehicle. It has more features than the Octavias available at that time in Holland, some of which are nice (five Alu wheels), some of which are useless (sliding roof combined with Climatronic, only available in red). As a returning alien resident I could import the car without paying import duty, VAT and the 25% tax on cars and motorcycles...

A lady at the homologation department in Mladá Boleslav sent me the necessary document after a request by telephone (free, within a week, by registered mail! Excellent service, the importer would have charged me around EUR 100.) With this same homologation report the import into Belgium cost me EUR 0.15!

Funny fact is that my reminiscence of my parents' very first car is a Škoda 1102 (Simca powered?) convertible in the late '40s, where I stood, sat and slept as a toddler behind the seats in the narrow compartment where the hood should fold in, if I remember well.

So you see, a quite long Škoda tradition. For working on, I'd prefer the old 1102... Alas, the Octavia contains more electronic parts than the average wide-screen TV. Even for me -with a degree in electronic engineering- that's not half as much fun as straightforward repairing something that is visibly broken!
