Goodbye vRS, hello Superb!

Featured Replies

So today I said goodbye to my Octavia vRS TFSI that I have owned for 6 awesome years.
It was time after all, as I had gone from commuting 6 miles each way to 70 miles each way, so the car sadly, was no longer suitable.
Time for:

Not sure if the boot is big enough though? So got Mrs Mac to test it.

Skoda Superb Estate CR Greenline Elegance. 36k on the clock.
Got more kit than you can shake a stick at and so comfortable! Electric everything, yet even after having been used to my vRS for so long, it's surprisingly responsive and yet returned 65mpg on my 168 mile journey home.

I'm sure most of you are aware, but I'd thought I'd list the kit (that I know of) that it has:
Bi-Xenon Headlamps with headlamp washers and cornering foglamps with "see me home" function
Full leather interior with heated seats, electrically adjustable and adjustable lumbar support with memory settings.
Park assist with front and rear parking sensors (not sure if I have the big hairy ones to try that out yet...)
Auto lights and wipers
Bluetooth
Satnav
Voice control
Folding mirrors
Dual Zone climate control
Footwell lighting

Probably has more, but I'm yet to discover it!
Bloody love this car already

Im 6ft tall, with rear seats down i can sleep in the back, needs an airbed tho as the load floor is stepped

  • Author

Now that's good to know, as I'm 6ft 2".

I feel an experiment coming on...

You can get a false floor to make it level.

  • Author

That's interesting, as the wife and I own mk2 Golfs and travel to shows, but have to camp. Usually resulting in a leaky tent...

With a false floor I may be inclined to just sleep in the car!

Do you have a link to the false floor?

Happy motoring! That's low mileage for 2011, looks in very good condition. No shortage of kit in the elegance. Your lights are adaptive as well and you should have auto dimming mirrors plus a few other bits that I'm sure discover....

Excuse my ignorance, but what do you mean the lights are adaptive? I've noticed when you first turn the car on at night with lights set to auto, they come on and sweep in and up and down.

Yes, I forgot about the auto dimming mirror too. Also, not sure if it's my imagination, but the wing mirrors appear tinted too? As headlights are far less dazzling from them compared to any car I've previously driven/owned.

Yes we are lucky finding this one. It was the colour we wanted (not seen many others in Rosso Brunello) and low mileage too. Hence us travelling so far to buy it. Also has been serviced only 700 miles ago and the Skoda dealer put four brand new Continental Sport Contact 2 tyres on.

Me as well, from 2.0tfsi down to 1.8tsi, which is surprisingly mighty, but I'm starting to miss vrs more and more every day.

Adaptive means that they look around bends as you drive and the beam alters its distance and angle depending on the speed of the car.

Both your interior rear view mirror and external mirrors will be auto-dimming. There is an on/off button for this just underneath the mirror itself. If auto dimming in engaged a tiny green light should be lit. I always leave it on and assume most do. Once it is engaged, The mirrors will give a dark green appearance and this prevents any glare from traffic. Even if a car behind you has full beams on it won't affect you, it will just appear as a soft light. Like most of these things, you'll never drive another car without it again after experiencing it!

Rosso is a fabulous colour and I still miss my old one! Such a shame they decided to drop it from the new Superb.

In terms of the lights, you'll have to leave them in the auto position in order for the adaptive lights/coming home/leaving home functions to work. Those functions are not active on the parking light or dipped light mode. Obviously to engage fog lights you will have to switch away from auto to dipped but most other times you can just leave them on auto and you have day time running lights (DRLs).

That adjustment of the lights that you see on start up is normal and is just a self adjustment.

There are other functions connected with the lights for example when you are driving in rain and your wipers have been on for a few minutes the auto lights should switch from DRLs to dipped beam. At night, the beam pattern can also adjust on motorways and narrow roads switching the beam to unlit sections etc. For example the beam will shorten in urban areas and increase and narrow on a motorway.

Also, when reverse gear is engaged, both fog lights will activate (in the front). The cornering lights will operate up to speeds of around 30 mph - beware that you might get people(who are not aware of cornering lights) telling you that you only have one fog light working as happens to many of us !!

So you see those adaptive lights are quite clever and that's only one of the toys!

BTW in case you're not aware, many functions can be adjusted in the Maxidot display - length of time for coming home/leaving home lights to stay on, footwell light intensity, how many doors you want to lock with the central locking etc. There is even a feature called 'rain closing' in there which automatically closes any open windows and sunroofs of you accidentally leave them open when it rains.

I think Citroen were the first with "cornering" headlights on the DS a long time ago

Yes Citroen were very ahead of their time alright. Pity their electrics weren't the same!

Welcome to SuperB world...

I too swapped a vRS Octy for my silver barge & I have no regrets.

I'm retired so commuting mileage is not an issue, & feel very lucky to have found one of the rare 2.0 TSi's.

SWMBO still has a petrol Octy 2 FL vRS mit DSG, so we can pick & choose / compare both cars &

for me it's the the big one that's best, especially for longer trips.

Enjoy your new car, & welcome to the SmugMug club!

Me as well, from 2.0tfsi down to 1.8tsi, which is surprisingly mighty, but I'm starting to miss vrs more and more every day.

I really don't miss my old vRS, but that's probably 'cos I changed it for a 2.0 TSi Superb.

T 'is a much nicer car to live with, IMVHO, & since I'm allowed to drive SWMBO's vRS Octy I/we do have a basis for comparison.

Each to their own opinion though, happy motoring!

Welcome to  Superb world, superb is a spacious car so no need to transport the mrs in the boot .

Thanks for all the info on this. I didn't know it was so loaded with tech! And I'll keep an eye out for the difference in light patterns, depending on different environments. I noticed the lights come on this morning when my wipers were on for a short while, which is a nice safety feature, as so often I see people driving in torrential rain with no lights on!

I'm still learning my way around the car, as the Skoda dealership couldn't find the book, but will be sending it out to me.

I wasn't in the market for an Elegance particularly, just an SE or above, depending on price. This one happened to come up at the right price, just the other side of the country, so well worth the trip!

So far I'm loving the new Superb (Sue, as the wife calls it!) The lack of power, compared to the vRS is more than compensated for by the toys, gadgets and sheer comfort of the thing. Since buying on Sunday I've covered 600 odd miles and have yet to fill it up. The MFD is only displaying a maximum of 60mpg (and that's being generous). Obviously compared to my vRS that's incredible, but as this is my first diesel, any tips on how to eak out more mpg? I set cruise to 65mph, but I'm wondering if it's more efficient to not bother with it and drive old skool?

Bear in mind that the MFD display for mpg has been found to be over-stated (i.e. too optimistic) by about 10%

That's worth noting! I have signed up to the fuelly site and app so that'll give me a clear indication of what mpg I'm getting.
