fuel filter changed car won't start even after using vcds

Featured Replies

hello folks

i had a problem on my fabia mk2 1.6 tdi 10 reg after changed fuel filter.

the fuel filter is  attached with only two pipes, one inlet and one outlet, no other pipes or connections.  using some plastic clips to hold the filter.

after changed the filter (filter doesn't fill with the diesel, looks  hard to do that), i tried to crank to start the engine, 3,4 times then battery flat. charged the battery, tried the crank again few times, no luck.

when i used the vcds (newest version), i can hear the pump working constantly but after 3 times of the testing, engine still cant start. and i noticed the filter might be the same weight before trying the vcds. its like no fuel goes to the filter even pump seems working.

and when i looked into the fault code, at first on the engine code section, i got fuel pressure on the common rail (dont quite remember) was recorded on yesterday.  cleared this fault code and rescanned, there is no fault code in engine part.  haven't tried to scan all the modules.

i did do a output test, but the result is:  no figues due to timeout

assuming everything is aright, because the filter seems can't  be primed through the vcds, is there another way to prime the filter?

and if the vcds can not prime the filter, is there must be some parts go wrong or need to be replaced?

many thanks

They do take a fair few turns to go once air is in there, a weak battery won't help. Have you tried a tow start?

thank you for the reply

can the car do a tow start?  i think the filter is only a third full, still mass air in the fuel system.

Towing it will get the engine tuning over faster. Faster the pump moves the quicker it will clear the air.

This is why you should fill it with diesel when you change the filter. You have to use some hose and/or a syringe. I got away with it 2 or 3 times on my golf TDI but when changing it on my Passat my luck ran out, I was always under the impression that with a lift pump it would fill the fuel filter but the trapped air going round the system takes forever to get rid of. I have seen primer pumps available to fit in the fuel line which could work also, they used to be fitted to older diesels as standard before they had lift pumps in the tank

I am thinking about changing my fuel filter as (eesamnomercy above ) good photo, I am going to clamp th 2 pipes before removing them and filling the canister with fuel with a syringe. No one seem to mention clamping the pipes   Thoughts please

Can you give us an up date  Cheers

Because you don't need to clamp them, it won't do much

Because you don't need to clamp them, it won't do much

My thoughs were in a closed system if you clamp the pipe any fuel in the pipe will stay in the pipe as you are fooling it into thinking that it is still joined. So when reconnecting you will only have the air that is in the short part of the pipe to the filter on both pipes to deal with. Bearing in mind the new filter will be full of fuel.
