Weird Starting Problem

Featured Replies

So I have a 1.9 Fabia PD100 ATD engine code and recently its been playing up quite a bit. There were 2 faults stored 1 of which was charge pressure deviation, sticking turbo vanes I think since it limps at just before 2500rpm. And the other was the Manifold Temp sensor I believe (Need to check again later). Also getting very, very bad MPG!

The weird thing about this is that no matter if its a hot or cold start, if I turn the key and wait for all the lights on the dash to disappear and then try to start it, it just cranks and won't fire :S. But then if I put the key in and quickly turn it from the first stage without turning ignition on first, it fires straight away.

This is just confusing me.

Thanks in advance

Sam

you need a voltage check under load   I guess after the glow plugs have soaked the battery  there's not enough juice to turn it fast enough to fire up  (maybe  ?)

Possibly, I'll give that a check when I can, maybe later on today.

Cheers dude

Both mine start immediately after inserting and turning the key, I never wait for the lights to go out summer or winter.

Mine was the same, started perfectly first turn of the key. I believe my problem is the glow plugs

Definitely not the glow plugs as I changed them earlier. Not done any harm in changing them though as the old ones were battered.

Lost on this. Could the sensor be my problem?

You might be storing problems for the future. I was always taught ( many many moons ago on a BT predecessor driving course) to let glo plug lights go out before starting. As I understand it, Skoda give glow plugs a set time to heat up ,and then keep heating till engine starts. Me- I'm an old derv driver- I let them go out before turning the key. And if you've driven older vehicles ,such as Vauxhalls, some times it needs multiple heating to start .

Better to take the extra time waiting I suppose for what its worth

Not nessary on a direct injection diesel engine. The glow plugs are simply there to clean up emissions when it's cold.

There is a combined boost pressure sensor / charge temp sensor device plumbed into the side mounted intercooler trunking towards the front of the driver's side inside wing. Might be worth checking the wiring and ideally substitute with a known good of the same type. It just "plugs" into the boost piping and also of course the wiring loom. I changed mine before realising the wires were broken just before the plug - duh !

Yeah I've been lead to this and I am planning on giving it a check over when I can, MPG is getting ridiculous at an average of 24  And its not like I have any power there to at least compensate.

Cheers though fella

Still no closer to resolving this at all and I'm pretty much losing it, it's booked in for its MOT this Saturday which it will more than likely fail on.

Anyone know why it only cranks and doesn't fire when I let the dash lights go out? is it related to it having shocking power output and MPG as well as going into limp mode pretty much all the time?

Another problem which has occurred is that the steering wheel sharply jolted to the left last night and then on the way to work this morning it did it twice and then the whole car shook and it pulled to the left strong so I had to pull over in a lay by but then it was fine after that :dull:

Any help is appreciated guys, cheers.

I'm now heading for fault codes, and expecting something like "Steering Angle Sensor - Implausible value" amongst those stored.

It sounds to me like your brakes are binding, the left front being worse than the others causing the steering issues. You may have a problem with the brake servo.

Hope not, didn't come up the other day but who knows

It would make sense, they have been making quite a bit of noise recently but they all looked OK when I checked.

Jack each wheel up in turn while the engine is running and see if they turn easily by hand, looking alone won't tell you much.

Just thought I'd ask, but anyone at all have any advice on why I have little power and limp mode (generally in third gear if i put my foot down) and why the car cranks and refuses to fire unless I quickly turn the key.

Any help Appreciated

You are right, regardless of the glow plug light, most modern diesels don't use them pre-starting unless it is really cold but they do come on post starting most of the time to help burn the diesel as cleanly as possible to help with emissions until you get a bit of heat in the engine. The ECU determines this from the coolant temperature.

They were all shot on my last passat but it used to start as good as ever but then smoke like mad for a few minutes until i changed the glow plugs

Just thought I'd do a quick update for the sake of it!

After pretty much giving up because of months of bad MPG and no boost (or at least very little) and going into limp mode every time I drove it, I have now more or less solved it!

I knew that since I had the Manifold Temp Sensor issue being thrown up when scanning for codes that I needed to check the wiring to the MAP sensor as I believe 2 of the wires coming from this control the Manifold Temp Sensor (A guess).

So I took my front bumper off Sunday to gain access to it and what do you know!! Clean snapped wire on the plug! Quickly taped it up as a temporary resolution until I can solder it and took it for a drive.

Power was restored, MPG has shot up since doing it Sunday and a big smile on my face :D

Top job mate

I don't know why I didn't check this first time round!

But I don't understand why it would just snap like that anyway because with the way its seated its not under any sort of stress and if it was then my bodge job with tape would break loose.

It just goes to show you that if there are fault codes, these need to be investigated first, even though they may seem unrelated.

Completely agree

Don't know why the wires snap either but, as I advised 2 months ago - they do :)
