2.0 litre exhaust system - rear box failure

Featured Replies

The rear box on my 2007 2.0 Tdi VRS fell off yesterday ( 100K + miles ).The inlet pipe fractured where it meets the box. Luckily I stopped before the box, which was still connected to the hanger, snagged on something on the road surface. I can barely detect any difference in noise from the exhaust and probably wouldn't have spotted this if the box had not been scraping on the road surface.

I could do with some advice. The middle and rear boxes and pipes appear to all-in-one from new. Do I need to cut the remaining pipe to fit a new rear box section ? As the noise difference is minimal could I replace the rear box with a straight pipe ( with a bracket to connect to the hanger ) and would this be OK for the MOT test ? Would it affect performance ?

I did a straight through pipe on mine about 6 years ago. Passed every mot without a problem.

Thanks Simon. Is there a part you can buy or do I need to fabricate a part from a piece of pipe and the hanger from the dead box ?
