Bad starting... When warm!

Featured Replies

Just a quick one... It's for a 1.9 PD mk5 golf but the same as my vrs.

Basically it starts perfect in the ice cold mornings, the engine bearly turns over one turn and fires up, battery is perfect so yeah... Starts fine.

Go for a drive around untill it's up to temp, pop in the shops for five minutes, come back out and the engine turns over at least five times before starting.

It's improved since setting the injectors up.

It's had a new coolant temp sensor.

It's had a new fuel filter.

Ita had a new timing belt and I changed the timing slightly by eye so I had adjustment both ways to adjust it correctly with vcds just havnt had a chance (it's been the same before and after this)

Only thing I can think of is the camshaft sensor but it hasn't logged a fault yet. Same with the flow plugs, I belive they bring a fault when they fail?

Any other suggestions.

Sounds just what I've experienced with my cam sensor going in the past. Only did it when engine was up to temp too. Although as you say it is odd that it wouldn't have thrown an error code up...

So just off hot? I'd actually suspect the CTS giving a wrong value to the EMS somewhere between cold and full hot.

I've checked the live data for coolant temp and it's fairly accurate to what the gauge shows so don't think it's at fault, like I say, it was replaced last year anyway.

Possible starter motor fault. I've seen a few octy2's that do that and a starter has fixed them

Shouldn't really need the glow plugs when warm, but they don't put the EML on when faulty.

Will show on VCDS though if they are faulty.

I don't think it's the starter motor personally, the engine turns over nice and fast?

Nah the flow plugs won't be doing much when it's fully up to temp. No fault with them on vcds no.

Last time I saw this on a PD engine, it was the camshaft position sensor. No faults log until it fails completely, but the false readings confuse the ECU leading to poor start when hot. When cold the engine uses the crank sensor to work out its firing.

I'll try the one from my car and see if it cures it on the weekend :)

Glow plugs threw up codes and eml for me.

'Glow plug intermittent electrical fault' or something along those lines.

I've had a failed glow plug on one of my previous vrs, came up somthing like "glow plug cylinder 1: open circut."

Hot start is usually cam or crank sensor in my experience, but I assume VCDS will have spotted this had it been the case?  :)

No faults at all for it, done a full scan of everything and the only fault was passenger rear speaker open circuit.

Evening folks, sorry to bring up an oldish thread but did anybody get this resolved? I have an 05 plate vrs that has just started to show the same issues, stop when warm and takes a good cranking over to get it going. This morning it happened and i tried unplugging the sensor on the coolant resovoir but still no sign of life, would that point towards  the cam shaft posistion sensor?

Regards

The sensor on the coolant tank is for coolant level, nothing to do with the running of the engine :)

The coolant sensor for the ECU is underneath the tandem pump on the rear of tea head.
