4 wheel alignment check!

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I have recently fitted H&R lowering springs to my Octy Vrs. my question is do I need to get my alignment check and if so where's good in Aberdeen?

What's the difference between the two? I've had 'tracking' done on cars before, which I always assumed to be the alignment...what's done differently with the geometry?

Normal tracking just touches the front and assumes the back is correct. A proper 4 wheel alignment does exactly what it sounds like.

So a 4 wheel alignment is the same as a geometry check/adjust?

Provided they check all 4 wheels!

Some Kwikfits can do it providing they have the equipment.

Its called a Hunter alignment

And you would trust a Kwik Fit fitter to do a Hunter job properly? The gear is only as good as the person operating it.

I have seen print outs where all 4 wheels are in the green, but thrust angle and steer ahead weren't both zero, different cambers across the same axle etc.

If you are doing the job properly the thrust and steer ahead both need to be zero, and the cambers equal across the same axle, preferably with every value in the middle of the range, not just within tolerance.

A good operator will spend the time to do this, it normally takes a few adjustments to get it right.

In my terminology, alignment is 2 dimensional (i.e toe or tracking), geometry is 3 dimensional (toe, camber & caster).

A 4 wheel alignment is often just performed with lasers hung from the wheels and it is assumed the rears are correct and the front aligned to the rear. On a car with fully adjustable rear suspension you can make a right mess of the tracking by doing this.

Provided they check all 4 wheels!

On something that can measure camber and caster, otherwise it is just alignment. If the car has been lowered the camber will need looking at as well.

Didn't think of that! lol

They might need re-aligning after the suspension change.

When I fitted a B12 kit to my O2 I took it down the MoT station to have them checked afterwards and they were too low as the front had dropped a few mm more than the rear.

Yes you do.

The front will be toeing in a bit far.  The rear will have excessive -ve camber (can't remember which way the toe will move - probably inwards)
