Cracking from front end

Featured Replies

My 130bhp Octavia had new bearings fitted pressed in. Second day of running its started with loud cracking noises random could be from both sides not sure. It could be a new fault jacked up the front no play in the bearings and turning smooth. How tight should the drive shaft bolts by done up and should it be tightened so far then backed of or just tightened.

The bolts for the drive shaft flanges are tightened up in 2 stages, I think you go round and nip them up at 15NM and then go round and do them at about 60NM. Don't quote me on the figures, it was a while back since I had a driveshaft off and it varies depending on which size bolts you have.

Could it be a noise from the suspension? You can sometimes get strange noises if they have tightened things up without having the car on its wheels or in the position where they usually run at.

I'm going to recheck over everything I can't see a bearing failing so quick but both wheels rotate nicely springs was of the other month and replaced with new ones and new top mounts and wishbones changed last year. All I've done is bearings track rod ends and inner track arms tracking is out but was taking it for new tires and tracking today

Well thought I would give a update been back on the road for 2 weeks now and a £6 front bearing fixed it. The expensive one from euro car parts was missing at least two bearings out of the unit. Was hard to find the fault as the sound was spreading via the bottom wish bone and making it sound like the gearbox. Have to say I had missed this car as the 1.4tdi Fabia was not very powerful
