What do these buttons do?

Featured Replies

Or what don't they do?

I'm in the process of buying an X-reg Octavia Tdi SLX, and I have a question.

Below the hazzard lights button and the two vents, there is a block of four buttons. I think the left most one was for the petrol cap release, and I can't remember what the right most one was, but the two in the middle were just blanking plates.

I wondered if someone could let me know what buttons would be present here on other models?

Cheers people,

Heated seat controls, and something else. Ejector seat? Rear oil dispenser? Machine guns?

Phil;)

Ejector seat you say? Better check I have a sunroof fitted first ;)

On my Y-reg Octy Elegance, the buttons are heated rear window, traction control on/off, blank, petrol cap.

IIRC, the blank button is used for the heated seat controls, if fitted.

Ian

L to R on mine

Rear demister

ASR (traction control, althoyugh why on an SDI  )

Heated seat

Fuel filler release

on an octy 4x4 its: Petrol Cap, ESP (Electronic Stability Program.. includes traction control), Heated Seats and Heated Rear Window.

Thanks.

I thought the Tdi SLX came with Traction Control, but I don't remember there being a button for it.

Does that mean that it is not driver configurable?

it means that it aint there bruv

If there's no button then all you will have is EDL (Electronic Differential Lock) which is very crude attempt at replicating and LSD by braking the wheel that is spinning.

As well as the buttons mentioned there is also one specific for Taxi's for switching an illuminated roof mounted sign.

Here's a piccie of my 05 Octavia vRS estate with all four buttons used.

Looks like I've got the same as Tavia RS - see his post above.

I think you have hit the nail on the head here!

According to Parkers, the SLX (which was before they changed to Comfort/Elegance etc) was fitted with EDL Traction Control.

Thank you!!

Shouldn't be, the roof mounted sign is required to switch on and off automatically with the meter controls. i.e. when hired the meter is switched on and the roof sign should go out, then when the passenger gets out the meter is switched off and the roof sign should turn on to show the taxi as being available for hire again.

There's definetely a button specifically for Taxi use. It may be for something else then but if what you say is true what do they do when off duty?

Put the roof sign in the boot!! they are magnetic.

Also when I say switch meter on and off I mean switch from 'Hired' to 'For Hire' when actually switching the meter off after finishing work the roof sign stays off.

Cant think what purpose a switch in the car could have for a taxi? all the equipment required is fully independant of the vehicle systems.

The only thing I can think of is possibly a remote switch for child locking the rear doors, instead of having to open them & turn the little switch. as far as i am aware though the only manufacturer that offers this function is Volvo?

Skoda do a number of Taxi options on the Octavia. I'll have a look tonight if I remember and post the details.

Here's the switch!

There's loads of other Taxi stuff including a roof sign radio and special seats.

I have to be honest and say that I nearly didn't buy my Octy because I was fed up with the amount of bl**dy taxi drivers with them. But then I thought, perhaps they know something that most people don't.....and they are right.

if they buy them and the police buy them... quality and price must be right

Hmm thats interesting! must be options that are available on the continent I would imagine. i've certainly never been offered any special taxi equipment, and none of the dealers have ever mentioned anything, got quite a few Octavias too!!

Mercedes are the only manufacturer that offer specific 'taxi packs' as far as i'm aware but these usually only consist of pre wiring for taxi systems, first aid kit, fire extinguisher and a built in meter in the rear view mirror.

I would imagine the 'taxi seats' are probably just harder wearing vinyl seats or something else that is easier to clean than fabric.

The roof sign and switch would be pointless in the UK as all councils have different reg's as to what the sign must look like (colour of letters/background/typeface/size etc) and the signs must be controlled by the meter so a council official or occifer of the law can tell if the vehicle is hired or not.

Interesting to see they make these parts though, the seats might be worth looking into :rubchin:

The main reason we all bought Octys to be perfectly honest was purely down to price and the fact that they came with a 3 year unlimited milage warranty, it wouldn't really have mattered if they were any good or not as most cab drivers just see them as a tool like a van driver would, personaly I dont just buy them as a tool, I like all the extras and stuff so I bought a Superb with the 130 engine and all the toys.

You will begin to see far less Octys as cabs as time goes on now, when all the octy 1's have reached the end of their usefull life most wont replace them with octy 2's due to price increase and no longer offering the warranty as standard, A lot of cab drivers regret purchasing Octy 1's too - not because they are bad cars (far from it) but because they are not really suited to the job, there is so little space for rear seat passengers that it's amazing they were ever approved for taxi use in the first place!! I also find the seats far to hard and uncomfortable to sit in for a twelve hour shift! I cant understand why they are so different from the Superbs seats?

Skoda made a very clever marketing move when they released the Octy 1 by aiming to get as many cab drivers in them as possible, but now it seems the success has gone to their heads and they aren't interested in us anymore! there's loyalty for you!! they could do well to realise that if it wasn't for the cab drivers, most of the current private Skoda owners wouldn't be Skoda owners!!

Most of us are purchasing Toyota Avensis's now as they are offering excelent warranty packages and prices for cab drivers, and as Skoda did they will actually honor the warranty!! (most manufacturers will not honor any warranty claims once a car has been cab'ed up)

What's the Avensis like as a motor? And what warranty are they offering?

I drive a reasonable number of miles per year (50-70k) and want a decent warranty.....

interesting that... can fully see where yor coming from on the comfort side.... jesus getting onto parents octy 1 after been in my furby is like steeping back into the dark ages on seat comfort they are like rock. Boot space is a big plus i guess but its that in favour of leg room. Ah well it served its time

Like the avensis, expecially the estate version.

It is a very very nice car, miles ahead of anything VAG can produce in terms of build quality and reliability, the only thing that currently lets them down is the diesel engines, requiring a 2.2 D4D engine to get 149bhp, however this is about to change, I have test driven a 175bhp D4D engined Avensis recently and it was fantastic, the best part was it didn't feel heavy at the front end like most diesels do, apparently the engine is all aluminium so there is no weight penalty against the petrol versions, it will be available in january and is also being fitted to the new Lexus!

Warranty to joe public is a standard 60,000 or 3 year affair, but we are being offered a 3year unlimited mileage warranty, wether this is solely being offered by my local dealer or not I'm not sure though. Having said that, we've got about 7 on the fleet already and not one of them has been anywhere near the Toyota garage other than for servicing!! (and Toyota actualy understand customer care too!)

You must have a left-hooker then, on a proper 4x4 it's HRS - EPS - Pile control - Petrol cap. ;)
