advice on selling price - 08 fabia 1

Featured Replies

Hi

I'm looking to get a new car soon and I feel like I have had some shabby part exchange quotes at skoda approved dealers. I've been offered £1000 from the dealer in grimsby, £1400 from Swindon and £1300 from Chester.

I've looked on autotrader and car dealer sites and found cars similar to mine up for about £3000. I've checked webuyanycar and wewantany car and been quoted between £1000-1400. Approached evanshalshaw who would give me the same as webuyanycar. Have not approached any independant dealers yet.

Before I started looking for my new car I decided I wanted to get £2000 for my car. Am I being ambitious?

2008 Skoda Fabia 1. 91000 miles. Good condition, 1 small chip on door, small crack on rear light and small rip to interior inside door. Full service history (skoda). No problems. Spotless interior, no real scratches to exterior.

Any advice appreciated, dont want to part with it for less than it's worth. I will sell privately if necessary but I dont really have the time and I feel like its riskier

Thanks in advance

What we want for or expect for our cars and what we get in part exchange are often very different things on cars over 3 years old. Anything over 10 years is laughable frankly. Anyway you've found we buy any car to be in line with what you've been offered? No surprises there they will usually offer middle book price and then probably try and reduce it on inspection. There is often a range in value not because what the dealer actually thinks the car is worth, but in reflection of movement he may have with profit margins or on a particular car. Someone may say they'll give you 1500, but no money off the car, all the movement has been taken away by giving top book money or maybe a little more to sweeten you up. When you buy the car you may find the deal is then manipulated by showing middle book for your car and some money off. It's all the same thing, really it depends on the movement they have in relation to the book prices, which they won't stray too far from. If I was you I'd try it private if you're not in a massive rush, auto trader website gets loads of traffic.

You might get £2k selling privately but I doubt it, the mileage is high and it's an undesirable engine.

WBAC is a front for the people behind Motorpoint and it works very simply - they keep a database of the prices of cars at auction and that's what they quote you when you log on and enter your details. That's why very commonly you'll get an e-mail from them saying their price has gone up, because their database shows demand for a particular car to be strong at the auctions and they suddenly want yours.

So, if WBAC says £1000-£1400 that's what you'd get if you took your car to an auction. So that's pretty much what the dealers will quote because that's where their black book values come from too.

The difference between what your want for your car and what someone will pay for it are two entirely different things. The price that a dealer offers it out at is also different because dealer cars have to meet certain criteria and they'll also come with a warranty and probably a fresh service stamp and MOT. Most dealers will also build in a bit for them to appear to give a decent discount or a handsome trade-in value for the customer's old car.

So, allowing for all that, you'll probably get £1650 for yours, tops. More than likely, anyone who has done their research will only want to offer you £1250. Sorry, but that's realistic.

Thanks for your replies, going to put up some ads and put a poster in my window, see what interest I get during the next 2 weeks, will get it valued properly by wewantanycar to see how much the online valuation gets knocked down and if I don't get offered much more than the PX privately or with wewantanycar then I'll PX it. Got 2 weeks to decide before my new car is delivered :)

Any pics of the car, inside and out?

Not sure if I'm allowed to put pics on case it's seen as an advert for my car?! As I've seen there's a special area to pay to put ads up
