Seats, back probs...and the pedals

Featured Replies

I am gradually getting used to my Roomster 2007 automatic, but I'm finding the drivers seat a little uncomfortable. Although it adjusts every which way, I can't seem to find a comfortable driving position. It doesn't seem to have a lumbar support at the base either. Does anyone else have these problems?  I am short in the body, being female. If I get it right for my back, it seems that the headrest isn't in a good position.

Secondly, the brake pedal seems higher than the accelerator pedal, is this usual?  In my previous car I never noticed that I had to lift my foot higher to use the brake, I think they were both at the same height, so switching from one to the other was never a problem.

I just wondered. Thanks for any info or suggestions.

Hi "M". I have a 2008 Roomster. I too found the seats in mine not as comfortable as I would like, missing the lumbar support was my biggest problem as well, after having it in my previous car. I thought the seats would have given a bit after a few years, but they didn't.

You probably don't want to go through what I did, I spent 18 months searching for seats that suited me, I eventually ended up with a set of Fabia Monty Carlo seats which I have in now.

One easy thing you could do, is use a small cushion, just to give the support you need in the middle of your back.

The other thing you could do is have the seats re trimmed. Just depends on how long you intend to keep the car.

Just thought, I think JML do a general back rest that will fit in a car that might help. That's all I can think of for now.

About the pedals, I don't have an auto, but my brake pedal is higher than the accelerator.

ps,Sorry carn't do anything about you being a little short :notme: Ha Ha.

Thanks for your reply, NZ.  I was originally attracted to this model because of how the seats adjust! :)  I have no end of spine and back cushions in the house, will try and see if that helps.  I have a spine cushion on the base already.

Thanks also for the info on the brake pedal.  Perhaps I need to alter the steering wheel and back off a bit, I will have to experiment!

ETA - just been on a search and found this, might go and have a lookie.

Back support looks good, certainly worth a try for the price.

I used to suffer with lower back ache in the Roomster, and found this was more to do with my posture than the seats.

I invested in a CG Lock http://www.cg-lock.co.uk/ more for holding me in place on track, but have found that the use of the CG lock also means no more back pain and less fatigue when driving.

Hope this helps. JMTPW

Hi Morgana,

I find the seats in my (present) Roomster SE considerably less comfortable than those in my (previous) Roomster Scout.  The lack of lumbar support is one issue, but my main gripe lies with the squab (the bit you sit on).  I find the angle too steep and the foam too soft.  I feels like I'm sitting in an old sofa on which the springs have failed, so my bum sinks too low and the roll at the front of the squab digs in to the underside of my thighs.  I have sat in other Roomster SEs and found exactly the same problem.

I have driven many cars during my 64 years, but the Roomster SE is the first car in which I have not been able to get fully comfortable.  If I decide to keep the car, then I will probably search for a pair of seats from a Scout.

MY SE is an auto and yes, the brake pedal sits a good inch higher than the accelerator.  I don't know the reason for this, but I have got used to it and no longer have to think about it.

Hope this is helpful.

After about three months of struggling to find a comfortable position in my car I bought one of those little cushions that go on a dining chair and it's made all the difference to me - I can drive for miles now without a problem. And yes, my pedals are at a different height, but I've got used to it...

Another vote for a cushion in the small of your back.

Morgana, I see you're sorting out the Roomster problems; another one you may not have found yet -  In very heavy rain the driver's side mirror and window are virtually unusable due to water being thrown off the screen. I haven't found a cure yet but drilling a 6mm drain hole in the driver side of the plastic scuttle in front of the screen has helped. I drilled close to the 3 small drain slots.

Yes, and thanks to all who have helped me on this and other problems posted on here! :)  Bryan, I had noticed the way the rainwater gets washed off onto the driver's side window!  I wouldn't dare go drilling holes though! :D

Beginning to think I've only bought half a car. I need a chair seat cushion thing, a set of deflectors, a clip on cover for the boot... and hopefully the 3 month warranty will cover the cost of a new arm rest as the one in the car was broken, didn't know until I had paid for it and brought it home....

Roomster itself is good, other bits and pieces just to get the car how you like it.

Waite till you get to changing, wheels, suspension, brakes. :D

Oh, and I forgot about buying a spare key as it only came with one!

Don't tell me its expensive, NZ!!! :x

The Key or everything else ?

It's worth contacting the previous owner to ask if they have the key, yes expensive!!

Never thought of doing that.  Will do and report back. Wouldn't it be good if the previous owner still had the spare?

NZ the other stuff you mentioned in the quote! No don't tell me!!!

Hi Morgana,

Yes, seats issues for me too, mine is standard Roomster in "2" trim.

Have purchased 2x wire-mesh back support via internet search, one for car and one for work van, about £6 each.

And also have 2x Friel Wedge which fill the seat base gap others have mentioned, again 1 per car and van. Recall these are from one of those mobility aids shops. They were suggested by a Chiropractor when I was getting bad lower back pain.

I also have a thick, multi-foam, fabric upholstered orthopaedic shaped back support cushion that I used to use driving Merc Sprinters; but that's relegated to household use, as is too hot most of year.  That was also from a mobility aids shop.

The wedges tend to slide a bit, might meed velcro or similar?

Recall that steering column can extend/retract, using same lever that allows you to raise/lower the wheel. Check handbook.

Other useful mods; I've fixed a swatch of matt-black cloth (garden centre) to the leading edge of the parcel shelf, and added felt strips to the forward edge of the fabric, it drapes forward over the rear headrests and down the back seats, the strips add a little weight to reduce wind uplift.

Other worthwhile stuff; replaced interior lightbulbs with LED's, transforms from dingy pub to operating theatre. And done rear numberplate bulbs.  And had HID Xenon headlights kit fitted, transforms light output!

Hope that helps!

It's a great car that just needs a little help to be even better!

"M" , Richard above just added a few extra bits you can do.

All this stuff we do, is done over time, not all at the same time.

I just throw a black cloth over the contents of the boot.  Prying eyes, looking through heavily tinted side windows, see only blackness in the gap between the rear seat and parcel shelf.

If anyone is near Nottingham I have a brand new set of wind deflectors going spare

Thanks for all the help and advice. One thing at a time. I decided that the first thing to do was to get the seat comfortable to drive in. Number one thing to sort as if I can't sort this out, I can't keep the car. (although, most modern cars seem to have hard seats, so I might be between a rock and a hard place on this one!) So...I went to Halfrauds yesterday and bought one of those seat things. It makes it a bit more comfortable, but it's still not right! LOL!  I have ordered a head rest cushion from Ebay, as it seems that now my back is supported, the headrest is nowhere near my head!  You can tell I'm determined to keep the car, can't you!  I'm going to try out the seat thing for a few days and see if it's the right thing. I had a word with the sales chap in Halfords and he said to try it out for a few days, if it's no good for me, I can take it back for a full refund. So that's something! :)

I've also written to the previous owner just in case she still has a spare key. I live in hope.....

Hi M, all you can do is give it a try. Very good of Halfords, to say you can take it back, that's fair enough.

Thanks, NZ.. I did have a couple of spine cushions in there (a wedge with a spine cut-out bit) but this seems a bit better. However, if the headrest works in conjunction with it, I'll keep it.

I will report back on the headrest when it comes and I've had a chance to try it. Might help someone else having the same problems! Why can't they make adjustable headrests?  They only go up and down. Mine is as down as it will go, makes no difference... now, if it tilted forwards or backwards (like the seat back does) wouldn't that be a good improvement?
