The Age Old Heated Mirror Problem

Featured Replies

I have recently purchased a pre fl octavia elegance estate 2008 and noticed the heated mirrors do not work.

I have successfully removed the mirror glass and tested the resistance. I Got 52 ohms resistance on mirror element.

I tested the wires to the mirror and I am getting around 14.1 volts from all positions of the mirror switch.

I have had the switch in Left, Right, Off and heated and the voltage is the same.

Would anyone suggest that the switch needs replacing 1st and then a couple of new mirror glasses? Help me please!

Just managed to check the nearside mirror too. 14.1 volt feed. Checked resistance of mirror element and it was 86 ohms.

So 2 new mirror glasses from eBay and possibly a new switch. Anyone else got any ideas?

Regards

Just guessing but if they are electric mirrors is there one live feed for all functions e.g. heating and motors and separate neutrals are switched to ground by the mirror switch.

Have you tested continuity between the neutral(s) at the mirror and ground in all switch positions?

Couldn't have put it better myself.

This has to be the case for the switch to have a live feed as soon as the ignition is switched on.

Thank you for your replies. Will have a look and see what I can find

Everything goes through the drivers door control module meaning there is no direct connection between the switch and the mirror.

To check the switch, you want to look at pins 2 and 3 - they should be connected when the switch is in the heat position and disconnected when in any other position. VCDS should confirm that the door control module can see when the switch is in the heating position.

I'm not sure what expected resistance is of a door mirror heating element is but google suggests than 10 ohm or less on a cold day so both of yours sound quite high.

I'd certainly be tempted to swap one mirror for a new one, if this fixes the issue then swap the other :)

For what it's worth both heated mirror glasses on my 2008 Scout no longer work very well.

They used to get quite toasty, now barely noticeable.

I'm assuming they just wear out.

I'd be interested to hear if new mirror glasses work for you, if so I may get some more for mine.

I'd say avoid the cheapest mirrors on ebay.

I made that mistake and the glass fell away from the backing within a few weeks.  :D  Still keep meaning to glue the left hand one back together.
