RED OIL LIGHT ON

Featured Replies

Hi I have a 1.6 TDI that the oil light is on but runs just fine.

the light will stay off if you do not rev over 1500 rpm.

any ideas please.

Edited by AATuck

have you checked the oil then? whats it like?

When was it last serviced? how many miles? what year is the car? etc etc

Sounds like you need to top up the oil or get an oil and filter change to help maintain the pressure.

Normally

>orange light means low oil level

>red light means low oil pressure - STOP!!!!

Confusing in that the light will stay off until 1500rpm, usually if you have a failure causing low oil pressure (oil pump, big ends, main bearings etc..) the oil light illuminates at tickover and gets worse when the oil is warm

Might be a faulty sensor but check thoroughly before you end up with a seized engine

Check the actual oil pressure with a gauge to verify the actual oil pressure is ok.

The OP has made two threads, One here and one in the mk1 section.

I'm confused, as in the mk1 section he says its a 2006 car and a 1.6tdi. So, i dont know whats going off? :D

ok i know the principle of the oil pressure as i was a mech many years ago when we had no stupid electronics.

the oil has been changed filter also. sensor changed a seperate wire from a battery via new switch to a  light suggests that the oil pressure is ok i DO NOT think the engine is in fault i recon its an electrical fault.

this car has had this fault for far too long to have low oil pressure and no go bang

oil level ok been changed its got good oil pressure i recon its a wire issue.

some one has suggested the same thing. The car runs too good to have low oil pressure.

I'd take it to a dealer to have them investigate :-)

I was always taught when diagnosing issues never assume anything. Always start with the basics, gonna feel stupid checking through wiring, replacing switches only to find some dickhead has left the bottom seal off the oil filter and it won't hold pressure.

I had someone else servicing my Volvo and had covered 120 miles going rather quick and then on the Motorway up came,

'Low Oil Pressure pull over when safe.'  So that was onto the hard shoulder,  Hi-Viz on, expected the worst.

Luckily they had just not fully turned the Filler cap all the way.

One way of rustproofing the engine bay!

No oil was coming out other than a light spraying at the cap.

Unlike a member here that took a car home from a Dealership Workshop with no cap on.

very good point once again thanks This car ran ok for quite some time with no issues.

Ok we got this car from a then skoda dealer think it was about 30k when we got it. never missed a beat after we had it 6 months this started . My partner stopped instantly read hand book checked oil added some oil as probably got the stick marks wrong only put in about half ltr. set off again same thing called me i did ask if there was any extra noises or lack of power no was the answer. at first op we had it sent into a skoda garage for a service oil change etc then it started again . after about 2 weeks i changed the oil and filter myself did find 2 minute bits of metalic items in the oil. so started to look on the net asking about vw tdi read all sorts about oil pump drives etc allen drives breaking. By this time i was thinking the worst as you do.

Had a guy have a look asking him to change the sensor as he did gave the old one back to me. he did say that the plug that goes onto the sensor was damaged suggesting some one had been there before.

we brought the car away it must have got to 1500 rpm light came on.

checking out the old switch. by prodding a pin up the oil hole this made the 2 contacts meet and so i put a temp light in the cab from battery to bulb to switch on engine. engine on light is on the light does not go oor come on instantly as the pressure needs to build and drop off in its course.(this swich works the opposite from say an old mini type).

Satisfied that the engine was ok bear in mind this is not a new issue just got fed up with the bleeping and the red light on all the time.

with the current issues with the vw scandal we was tempted to drop it like a bad penny. but the price given was just too low. so we intend to run it into the ground if poss as i am sure its good for 175k.

As suggested i recon its a fault in the harness and was trying to ask if it was a known fault code it has been plugged in with no faults showing . ????????????.

So as suggested probably best to get an ato electrician rather than a mechanic to sort it out.

I have managed to stay away from too much of the newer type vehicles that need plugging in.

Myself i worked for bosch and lucas on the old diesel fuel pumps and injectors for over 30 years having formerly been a HGV mechanic.but this its out of my scope of experience.

Many thanks once again.

Most experienced 'mechanics' like myself are fully qualified auto electricians. You can't really be one without the other these days.

I appreciate that I got out of the trade when they started plugging things into cars. Being of the age now tech is leaving me behind.

I own an old truck a 1963 Commer TS3 2 stroke diesel. and a morris minor thats about my limit other than being aimed in the right direction.
