Fuel gauge

Featured Replies

Hi I just bought a skoda octavia 1.6tdi 2011.it was a ex taxi with high mileage but it runs fine. The only problem im having is the fuel gauge sometimes works but then the needle drops to the bottom and gives no reading at all.The garage has checked all the wires and found no faults. Please help!!!!

Does the range to empty go to zero as well? or does that always remain stable?

If the fuel level sender has been checked out and found to be ok, it could be the instrument cluster messing about. There are companies that will take the cluster and test/diagnose the fault and repair for a reasonable amount of money. Much cheaper than a new part.

Has the garage used a proper VW scanning tool on the car? A generic scanner might miss a fault like that. VCDS can read off the actual amount of fuel in the tank in litres. If it can read off the quantity correctly, it proves the level sender is working and points to the dash. There are lots of members here that have VCDS at their disposal.

It hasn't got a fuel range option being the basic model and not really sure what equipment the garage used to be honest..

Ok, I was under the impression that both types of display had the ability to show the miles to empty option.

Before you go any further, the best thing to do is get the car scanned with a diagnostic tool that is suited to VW group cars. The best (and cheapest) way is to get hold of another member with VCDS who can check it for you in exchange for some beer tokens. Otherwise you might be spending good money after bad without knowing the cause of the problem.

Failing that, a Skoda dealer can scan the car but that will cost you.

Don't know anyone in Manchester but your local Bosch dealer might be able to help.

My 2007 Octavia 2.0 Tdi does exactly the same thing. The guage contents and range go to zero.  I can make it all work again by dropping the clutch, switching it all off while under way and then re-starting using the starter motor and re-engaging the drive. All is good for a few minutes then it all goes down again.

The people who have serviced our Audis, Skodas and SEAT over the years don't believe me because it never mis-behaves while they have it.  It's been going on now for six months or more.

Damned nuisance!

I'm really obsessed my slosh 2004 diesel 1.9tdi fuel gauge is playing and my speedometer ain't working n my mile isn't increasing
