headbolts & rocker gasket = leak ><

Featured Replies

Loads on eBay with 19mm (I think that's he size needed) for around £20

Ive done the elephant hose thing lol, a pipe to the floor ... but it does spit out a fair bit of oil, nicely lubricating the underneath of my car :P

 - Just to add i bought a torque wrench, and ive been massively  over tightening these bolts... 10nm is nothing! Ive also used the silicon suggested, so will have to see, fingers crossed.

That could have been part of the problem, could the tightness have squeezed and spread the gasket a bit?

Must be around £30 then, it's been a while since I bought mine.

it seems fine so far, ive been out twice first time gently up to temp, checked for leaks, all is clean. Second time for a spirited drive, and no leaks, so ye maybe the tightness was distorting the seal. Oh and ive fitted the draft 42 bushes and the psi bracket solid bushes ... What a difference these make!!

What are these bushes?

Well this didnt last long ><

4 months and its leaking bad, down the rear airbox side ...

I used sealant, and really wished i didnt as it will be a pig to clean off and start again. Next time i will do this with no sealant and all new nuts. If it fails again, i guess a new cover is required.

 - Anyone know where to get the rocker cover nuts from? Skoda charge a fortune i think they where £3.99 each !!!

I'd just get...

- new gasket

- small tub of grease

- 6 new bolts.

And that should sort it.

I fear the rocker cover itself may distorted due to a sad history of hamfisted brutality.

Grease? type, and applied on the gasket surface?

why 6 ?

Ye could be, for the sake of £13 i will attempt another gasket first. If anything i imagine that due to over tightening the bolts originally, this may have damaged where the bolts sit in the cover.

Just some multipurpose grease will do, yeah just to lightly apply to the contact surface, just a little bit so the rubber spreads out nicely.

Ideally you can replace them all, however I've reused them plenty of times and never had any problems. With you thinking that could be a problem get 6, one for each corner and one for the middle rear and one for the middle front. The others should squash the gasket enough for it to not leak.

To add.... I've never seen the bolts stretched or anything, I've seen loads of threads stripped out of the head from over tightening them but that's it.
