What is this noise?

Featured Replies

Hi All, My car is making strange whine when it shift from 2nd to 3rd gear. This doesn't happen all the time.

No idea, but it doesn't sound good

^ What he said!

Does it do it regardless of what speed you're doing?

A very familiar road at Kangaroo Point  ;), that doesn't sound normal at all. Can you replicate the noise easily? or does it come in random time?

Sounds like you've half an ambulance in the back. I'd get that checked asap though, sounds very odd

Thanks for your replies. It only happens at low speed. It can't be replicated easily. Other thing I noticed was, it only happens when the engine is warm with air con turned on and DSG shifts from 2nd to 3rd. It is more pronounced while driving on slope/descent.

Upward slope or downward? And is the noise during the actual gear-change itself, or as you're building engine speed in 2nd?

Happens on both when the car is building speed. It stays for a while after the shift is complete.

Auto?

Sounds like brakes are slightly sticking.

Auto?

Yes, 7 speed DSG.

I've heard that before on Nissan auto's and the rear pads don't release properly.

Thank you. I'll ask the dealer to check the brakes too.

Let us know what they say.

Sure  :)

I just noticed that you were the one who posted a video on my thread about my DSG issue. As this seems to be the same problem as I have, your current noise is probably the same issue that has become worse. You'll probably get replacement clutches. I've been notified that updated versions of the parts have become available that should fix it.

DSG clutches. Could possibly be a brake pad sticking but unlikely.

@Sak be sure to let us know what the problem turned out to be

Hi all, Just came back from the dealership. They've confirmed, it is a transmission problem. So far, the dealership had few golfs and one Skoda with similar issue. They also said VW has redesigned the clutch packs for new transmissions (my car is 03-2014). Dealer was  not sure whether to replace the whole transmission or just the clutch pack. In the past, Skoda asked them to replace the whole transmission but VW only replaced clutches for those golfs. Tech has contacted Skoda with all technical details taken from the transmission. Hopefully it'll get replaced next week.
