Noise tapping from yeti 1.8 TSI 2011

Featured Replies

Hi

First thread so sorry if I ramble.

Monday morning my yeti started to make a loud tapping noise coming from the engine sounds like tappets from an old banger( have video so if anyone can tell me how to add that would be great) noticeable when bonnet is down but very loud when bonnet is up.

Engine noise drowns it out when driving but the turbo is loud almost squealing / high pitched whir upon acceleration. The tapping is constant when engine is hot or cold performance is the same and no engine lights on, I have checked the oil , coolant etc... , full service history( last serviced in June) only done 25000 miles (4k since service)

Took it to Skoda and they said there is a noise but its normal for that engine (though not before Monday) and charged me £45.

Should I be worried.

thanks for your help

Ollie, any unusual engine noise is worrying.

Did the Skoda Dealer tell you there is a noise, then charge you £45 to tell you what you already know?

And yet, they say its normal?

Did they offer any other reasons for the noise?

Sounds to me you should perhaps visit a Non dealer and ask for their considered opinion.

Just guessing here, it could be the Hydraulic tappets need replacing.

Lastly, have you checked the oil level when cold?

Dip the stick at least 3 times, wiping it with rage each time.

Hi Ollie - you might want to give a more precise location than UK because that may help forum members to recommend somewhere for you to take the car to get a second opinion. You won't need to read too many threads before you realise not all dealers are equal. Hope it's nothing to serious.

If you got an invoice and the engine goes bang it's their problem. But I would still seek an alternative view.

Possibly the cam chain tensioner?

A video upload would help us  :)

A noisy tappet on cold for a few seconds seems to be quite common these days but if it still does it when the engine is hot then it needs sorting really. If its the cam chain rattling I wouldn't be driving the car at all until it was sorted

A little off topic, but I was pushing the speed limit passing Chester Le Street on  the A1, one cold dark night, when I got a tap tap tap on the side window.   The windscreen trim on a Montego had sprung out and was blowing in the wind. Bit of a shock when it happened !!!!!

I did not realise it was 40mph max there.

Ah don't knock it. After a manual choke conversion, Monte was a faithful servant for mant years. Changed the cam belt myself...... no special tools...took about one hour, at 90,000 miles. Happy days.

Could be carbon buildup on the valves, chain tensioner, leaky injector seal/exhaust manifold gasket, sticky tappet or low oil/old oil on the chains.

I think you can inspect the 1.8/2.0 TSI chain tensioner without removing the chain kit, there is a rubber inspection bung you can remove to inspect it and see if the piston pushes back by hand or not.

Get yourself a mechanics stethoscope and have a prod around, the fuel injection unit on the right side of the block can make a right racket.

Hi

Thanks for your replies

VW mechanic told the assistant at Redditch that it was something about the fuel pressure changing and all 1.8tsi engines make that noise sorry to be vague but I then stopped listening as it just sounded like a fob off  and being in a rush just paid and left.

Noise is loudest coming from the front near the alternator  / belt area, checked the oil again by the minimum so topped it up ( was full just before xmas ) still doing the noise and doing an oil change Saturday as a precaution but really shouldn't need it.

Had a basic listen on various bits on the engine without digging too deep alternator is not the problem and cannot pinpoint noise to 1 area

Still don't know how to up load video instructions would be great thanks because it may be fine or someone might know exactly what it is.

Still running and driving fine but have found a similar noise on you tube from a 1.8tsi Seat driver he was told it was normal as well.
