A few observations and questions

Featured Replies

Hi to everyone. Long time since I visited the forum, but pleased to see that it is still alive and active.

My 2010, 2 litre 110 2wd is approaching it's 6 th birthday, and is under active consideration for renewal.  First some observations on the current model. When purchased, I was making regular 400 mile trips up and down the A1.  Sketi as she is known, performed these duties admirabley.  It was punchy enough for my needs and economy was ok.  However, family needs meant moving to Newcastle, with now mainly short urban trips, and few decent runs. Apart from fuel,  running costs have ammounted to two services, two mot, two front wiper blades, and two new tyres. Apart from servicing it has needed half a pint of oil, a precation before a holiday in north Wales. It has only 30,000 miles on the clock, but I anticipate being advised that I need a new cam belt  ( and water pump ),

maybe four new tyres, and maybe exhaust pipe components over the next twelve months.

So it may be the right time for a change.  Having looked around, nothing appeals as much as a second Yeti. I am thinking 1.2 SE with light assistant and mudflaps, and maybe lumbar support.  Switching to petrol will suit my journey style better, and hopefully give me another 6 years trouble free driving.

So. Question 1. Is the 1.2 petrol engine really up to hauling the yeti around ?  Question 2.  That damned rear view mirror has to move upwards. Does the light assistant still postion the mirror in the higher position ?

Welcome back! Loads of threads on the forum about the capabilities of the 1.2 engine in the Yeti and I'll think that those of us with that engine find it more than sufficient for our needs but a decent test drive should tell you one way or the other. I came to the Yeti from a 2.0 diesel Volvo with on paper an extra 30+ bhp and can honestly say that I've never regretted my decision to go for the small petrol rather than another diesel. I am usually doing a mix of short and medium runs quite often with four adults and the extra weight of a sunroof and spare wheel and never found lack of power a problem.

Can't help with the mirror I'm afraid.

Hi Paul52. Thanks for your greeting back and for your comments.  I am somewhat older than the yeti, ( approaching 70 ), and do not have the need for speed. So having read quite a few of the threads concerning the 1.2 petrol, am fairly sure that a test drive is on the near horizon.  The low positioned rear view mirror really has been a pain over the six years. It is amazing just how much it can obscure. Caused a smart jab to the brakes on more than one occasion.  So please can anyone confirm that the light assistant option does put it in the right place still.

Yes, I have a replacement 1.2 on order ....plenty of poke for me, in fact surprisingly nippy especially around town, as long as it's not too loaded down. I've ordered light assisrant amongst a few other things and am expecting the mirror because of  associated sensor to be in the higher  position.

Hi Microlite. Yes thanks for that. Have you also ordered the auto rain sensor, because from memory that also moved the mirror ?   What sort of lead time are you expecting ?

Hi ganga...no, just ordered the LA....ordered first week in January and due to be built next week so delivery early/mid March probably.

Ah nice one.  I would like to change in May, so better start organising things. Incidentally, first car I have owned where strangers approached from day one, to make positive comments ask questions etc.

I recently went from a 2010 110 TDI to a 2016 110 TSI DSG. The performance feels remarkably similar although much smoother and quieter. I'm very happy with it and happy I didn't go diesel again. I have an SEL so have the auto dimming mirror and it is not only mounted higher it's also much slimmer too.

Thanks rrigs. The SE model pretty well covers my needs, except for the rear view mirror. The auto dimming extra ( which I do not need ), is quite pricey. So I would prefer the cheaper light assistant if it still does the job. I was also wondering about my spare wheel. Is the boot still the same dimension. Could I transfer my existing spare wheel, and would I then end up with the flat / level rear bumper and boot floor as my existing motor ? I didn't find the sales people very knowledgeable about these things back in 2010.

The spare wheel and plastic bits can be swapped.

Thanks Llanigraham. I think we might be go.

When swapping the spare wheel over, as Graham hints, you'll also need to swap the boot floor, the boxes underneath, and the wheel hold down bolt into your new car, and transfer from the new one the can of gunk & the compressor, and swap the net systems over too as they are a different size to allow for the different floor height.

And according to my dealer's spec sheet, from early Jan 2016 there is a modified interior mirror which no longer has the switch in the bottom edge for manually turning off the auto dimming function. So you really need to check a car with the new mirror.

I can confirm my 2016 L&K doesn't have a switch.

My SEL mirror also has no switch and no visible sensors. The mirror itself is a very slim design.

Ta for recent updates. My concern is only for the position of the internal mirror. The lower position is right in my eyeline and has been a nuisance for the the passed 6 years, I merely want confirmation that the light assistant option will push it upwards into the " sensible " position. I have no need for, nor wish to purchase the much more expensive auto mirror dipping option. Called into local dealer this am. They were not sure and are checking for me. Hope to get a test drive for Friday, and all being weel will place order for nice new 110 TSI.

What does the light assistant option give you?
