Painting

Featured Replies

Just looking for some general advice, the Rear spoiler on my Red VRS has faded and gone white In the corners. I have just purchased a Black badge less front Grill and was thinking about repainting the rear spoiler black to match. Black and Red goes pretty well together and my wheels are black also. Anyway, I can get free rattle cans of black paint various gloss levels and colours etc. So I was looking for a guide or advise on prepping the surface and what to do when it comes to lacquering. I have painted stuff before quite successfully but they have always been inside the car Radio facia surround and Engine cover etc. The spoiler being exposed to the elements and constant washing needs to be a good job.

I'm no expert, but a friend of mine who works for revive did the spoiler on my vRS for me. He removed any laquer that had bubbled, roughened the finish to allow the paint to adhere and used panel wipe to ensure there was no silicone on the surface. then he sprayed it, but with his fancy machine. It was straight forward to remove the spoiler, but it is stuck down as well as screwed in.

HTH mate.

Yeah my spoiler has been off before its just 4 screws underneath easy to get off.

Its mainly the lacquer stage im unsure on. Once the paints dry do you flat it back or just paint straight over with lacquer?

Do you need to then machine polish the lacquer etc.?

After he applied the paint, he baked it I believe using infra red heat lamps, then laquered and again heat lamps went on. Then he wet sanded it all down and finally machined polished it.

I knew I shouldn't have said it will come off easy. I have just been out to it and two of the Torx Head screws have rusted since I last took it off and I have now rounded them off trying to get them out. Bugger does any one know the part number so I can get replacements? MKII VRS. I Know most self tappers would do but id prefer them to be right.

Sure a bodyshop would only charge a small amount to respray, is that an option?

Cost me £80 cash for my spoiler to be done.

Its an option, but we have compressors air lines and pot guns for spraying at my work. I could get one of the lads to do it for free. I was just more wanting to experiment.

I always have this as a backup If it goes wrong. The main problem I have now is not being able to get the screws out, thinking I might have to angle grind them off but risk

cutting the boot lid.

Think they could be N 91122901 but can't be 100% sure.

That's from a 2013 model hatch spoiler - requires 4?

Well finally got round to getting it done. Decided to just paint the middle flat part of the spoiler Black it would have looked too much I think to do the whole spoiler. I like it, matches the wheels and grille now. Once I get chance to clean the car and its in a better position I will take some proper shots. Going to start a build thread I think changed quite a bit now and want to keep track in a single thread rather than lots of separate posts. They were the correct bolts so thanks for the help.
