Overnight starting problem

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I've got a minor-ish problem. Since I had my new turbo fitted last Saturday, the car struggles to start in the morning. It is cranking fine, but it feels like there is no diesel...takes about 7 turns to prime itself....this is when parking on very very small incline (1,5 degree?) pavement.  It will start right away for the rest of the day.

I tried to park 'nose down' last night and it fired up straight away.

What did they disconnect what causes fuel to drain back?   Anything obvious to check?  I don't think he touched the fuel filter hoses.... just all the air intake was apart. (i've only found the air box vacuum hose not to be connected as he forgot, but that made no difference)

Cheers,

Mike

Don't touch any fuel lines changing a turbo I'm afraid.

Could be because it's set up different or just be a coincidence.

yeah I know he didn't really need to :(

The EGR cooler was removed and blanked off, but that should not make a difference. I'm puzzled what has happened, runs spot on otherwise...even after work (which is cca 8 hours) fires up right away.

...maybe it simply doesn't like going to work :)   which is understandable

Right, the starting in the morning is getting worse, I had to press the accelerator to get it going. If I just turn the key it strats just to cut out straight away. It only happens on a cold engine (or more than 4 hours of inactivity)

What to investigate first... glow plugs, fuel pump ( It does the right noise like it's priming when you turn the key)

Check the hoses are tight on the tandem pump and all the other fuel connections in the engine bay and on top of the lift pump

Does it make a difference how much diesel is in the tank?

The lift pump has its own reservoir of fuel so the pump never runs dry as the tank gets empty.  There is an NRV at the bottom that can fail and cause the fuel to leak out causing air to be drawn in and cause hard starting.

thanks for tips, it starts better when parked nose down (so I guess gravity keeps the fuel near the engine)

My tandem pump looks a bit dodgy, all the passenger side of the engine is quite moist... not sure if it is oil or diesel...it's been like that for a while, I can smell it in the car as it warms up too)

Check the hoses on the fuel filter aswell, there are some 'O' rings on the thermostatic 'T' piece that sits on the top of the filter with the 'mickey mouse' clip that can sometimes need replacing
