Rare and difficult to get hold of Japanese parts

Featured Replies

I’d value your input on this one folks.

We’re looking to refresh the suspension on the Ignis as it is running on the original setup from 2005.  Some of the parts are not easy to get hold of as they were pretty much bespoke for the Sport and the homologation rules at the time.  The only place that the front struts and all the springs are available in the UK is apparently through main dealerships or if you’re feeling brave, via Japanese websites with no English translation options.

I popped into our local Suzuki dealership during the week and after a mammoth searching session on their computer got all the part numbers and prices.  For the struts and springs alone they come in at an eye watering £789.  That’s without the top mounts and fitting costs.

To save a bit of money, the springs could be kept as it’s a light car and not particularly hard on them.  For just the struts the price would be £432.28.  I have a friendly garage that’s looked after my cars for years so the fitting cost would be a lot cheaper than Suzuki are quoting at 5 hours labour which comes in at £450!

Anyway, I was wondering if any of you had any suggestions as to where I might find a supplier or if you know of anyone who can refurb the original struts?

Just as an added challenge I’ll put up the part numbers for the front shocks and see if you can do better than me at finding them.  The front nearside is 41601-60J50 and the offside is 41602-60J50.  I’ve been on with this for a while now and to be honest it’s getting on my nerves.  Serves me right for having a car that was made in such limited numbers I guess. :notme:

Cheers,

Andrew.

What set-up are the rally Ignis's using?

Might be worth talking to someone who has one.

Give Darren Wilson a call or an Email, he may have what you need as take offs,

or will direct you to someone that has.

The front springs and shocks are unique to the Sport as far as I'm aware.  The rear dampers are standard but the springs are unique again.  I'm on the owners forum but it's a pretty quiet site as there were only about 1500 made in the first place.  A lot of people on there have given up on the whole thing and gone for aftermarket coilovers but one of the Ignis' charms is the OEM setup.  Suzuki spent a lot of time on getting the balance right so that it can handle a blast down a bumpy B road.  Coilovers will have me bouncing off into the hedgerows on the first corner from what I can gather.

Thanks for those links.  I looked into these a while back but unfortunately they are for the MKII Ignis and are listed incorrectly.  The second version was a five door car that was built in Hungary (not Japan where it was sold as the original Swift Sport) and this is the car that most of the generic car part sites list.  An example is that the OEM part number they list is 41800-80GB1 as opposed to 41601-60J50 which according to Suzuki will not fit.  Plus they are calibrated for the heavier five door car and not the Sport.

I did thanks but they only deal with the 1.3 non Sport.  Shame as the prices are very cheap.

I'll look into this thanks.  It's definitely an avenue that I haven't been down yet so might be worth a try.

I appreciate the suggestions as I figured that there is a wealth of knowledge on here that I haven't yet tapped into.  Keep them coming as I'm determined not to let this beat me.  As they used to say on Top Gear, 'How hard can it be?. :D

Was gonna say bc racing do coilovers

I would give AVO chassis dynamics a try they may be able to refurbish what you have easily enough. I've had a few dealings with them for motorsport dampers including having some made to my special and they have always been friendly and willing to try and help.

Also CTC Performance in Somerset. He deals with everything Suzuki. His name is Chris and he races these.

Thanks loskie.  I've had a look at those links and some of the coilovers look like really nice pieces of kit.  All of those options have been run by various people on the forum at one time or another.  Opinions vary as to whether they are suitable or not.  The car weighs around 950kg so some reckon that some of the coilovers are just too harsh for everyday driving.

I'll have a look at AVO and CTC.  They might be able to direct me to either some suitable refurbed units or a more suitable coilover setup.

To answer your question loskie, the Japanese domestic market knew the car as the Swift Sport.

You'd have thought so wouldn't you?  Unfortunately they don't make it for the Sport.  They cover every other model but not the spec that I need.  It's a real pain to be honest.
