LED headlamp bulbs?!

Featured Replies

I saw pictures of a H7 HID conversion kit fitted to to a MK3 Octavia and light was in all the wrong places - an H7 LED kit is likely to be just as bad. The O3 has reflector style headlights which can't control the light output from non-halogen sources as they don't mimic a filament bulb closely enough.

The most cost effective solution will be performance bulbs such as Osram Nightbreakers or Philips Xtremevision but they might not last as long.

If you want to move to HID or LED lighting then you need to look at complete projector retrofits to get good beam pattern without glare.

Philips has designed an LED bulb to replace halogens, but currently this is only available for H4. Also, there are many kits out there with the word "Philips" in it as the Horizon LED sample shows, but mostly that only refers to the LED chip used, it's not a Philips designed product.

It states in the description an "excellent, if not like-for-like beam pattern". I'd say try them and see, and if they're all over the place then send them back!

There are H7 HID kits (H7R) that are designed for use in reflectors and produce the correct beam pattern, so have a look for those.

Unfortunately with HID, unless you have headlight washers and self-leveling lights, they are not suitable for road use.

Any dipped beam over 2000lm requires headlight washers regardless of if it's HID, LED or even high powered halogen (ECE48 6.2.9).

H7R bulbs are not suitable for all halogen reflector housings, this is an example for H7R fitted to a MK3 Octavia which looks terrible! http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/264447-hid-aftermaket-kit-help-for-definitive-how-to/?p=4517898
