Front assist - false positive

Featured Replies

This morning after I crossed a narrow bridge with reversible traffic and approached a car waiting at a red light on the other side, the front assist decided to activate, showing a a big red sign on the Maxidot, accompanied by a loud beep. Scared the hell out of me. I don't think it reached the emergency braking phase as the road became wider and turned slightly left - as a result the car must have disappeared from the dangerous area of the radar field of view.

Has anyone had similar experiences?

Yes, quite a few, and the radar sometimes picks stuff up on the periphery, I'm a late braker (known for it!) so I may be getting a few more warnings than is normal.

I've had it a couple of times, where the car in front has slowed down and is turning left into a side-road.

As a human you can judge that it's going to have moved out of your way so you don't need to slow too much - but the car senses it as a stationary object.

Scared me first time it happened too!

On the plus side, quite nice to know it's working.

Yes I have had this happen on two occasions. Both times at a roundabout with one of those left hand slip lane/no stop entrances. First time nearly caused an accident as I had no idea what it was; instinctively slowed and looked for somewhere to stop as the alarm seemed pretty urgent in its tone and volume. Second time I was still ‘alarmed’ by the alarm but knew what it was.

I also assume it is because it detected the stationary cars waiting to enter the roundabout. These cars are not a full lane width to your right when you first start to 'slip' into the lane so I guess the radar sees them as in thr frontal collision area.

However I did smile when I checked the manual; lost in translation?

‘There is a risk of a collision with a stationary moving obstacle in a vehicle speed range of approximately 30 km/h to about 85 km/h.'

Has happened to me a couple of time on a roundabout where someone has ignored the 'give way to traffic from your right' and nipped out. Once the system did actually brake - probably because the flashing red thing and beep made me look down and think WTF was that - whoa why are we stopping?!

My shoulder hurts now - blasted seat belts! :-)

You get use to the ACC and it's characteristics. A lot of the false alarms are actually not false, and just an over sensitivity to obstacles in its view. It definitely airs on the safe side.

After 18 months with the system I really like it, and can usually preempt the warning lights, and if need be (when safe to do so), just accelerate through it. This prevents the system taking any further action so it will not slam the anchors on :)

I was already braking on each occasion that I mentioned above so didnt notice whether the auto system did intervene. I just flipped when the alarm sounded. I also did not have ACC selected at the time.

It is the fact that it alarmed when there was no reason to do so according to the traffic conditions. It's a similar issue to the 'undertaking' issue identified a few months back. There doesnt appear to be any reason why it would alarm given what you see in front of you. Once you know it is likely to do these things it's OK but the first time is not a comfortable experience.

Totally agree, the first (couple) of times it does seem pretty wierd, and the natural reaction is to let the car do it's thing & brake, even if you're already braking.

As I said earlier Ive had mine 18 months now, and I now see things I know will trigger it. However there have been a couple of times when it's triggered for no apparent reason :( If your comfortable that there isn't an obstacle, just stick your foot on the accelerator and overide the system. It does become second nature I promise :)
