Yeti making strange noise

Thanks, will leave them change it as it is under warranty and hope that solves it.

Many thanks.

So it's a moot point - it's constantly ON

But

Not necessarily active ie mechanical friction/drag.

Are CO2 emissions (placarded) with it active?

I think not.

Thinking about it, when looking for a Yeti last year we were originally looking at used for sale locally. One I tried that was rather cheap had a substantial metallic clatter that I traced to the air con - I knew this was the source because the noise stopped completely when it was turned off. So, whilst the pump is running when off, something is different more than simple load on the system to cause the noise that was quite intrusive. The dealer (independent not Skoda) said they would re charge the system and it would be fine. At that point I walked away.

Not in the EU as IIRC the test are performed with the aircon off. Therefore it would be illegal for the manufacturers to advertise the car with figures for the CO2 emissions with the aircon running.

That's the last thing they'd want, as it would increase CO2 levels.

Emissions levels are driving car design and we are the recipients of such largess ((((

It never ceases to amuse me how people are surprised that a car performs differently in reality to the tests, after why should driving in the real world be different to inside on a rolling road...

At best the results offer a semi quantitative comparison between different vehicles, that's it.

Yep

Comparisons only......some people won't accept that though

AC is not just for cooling. One of the reasons the current methods are used is to keep a small amount of flow through the system to make sure it keeps working correctly, by not allowing buildup inside it and keeping seals lubricated. Most cars will also have humidity sensors and run the AC to dry out the interior. It might not be a big deal in Australia, but in the UK we have a very wet climate and I imagine my AC pumps out more water than it does cool air.

Not at all

We have many cars that sit outside overnight in our winters and for them the demister magic wand is much appreciated in .......reverse cycle fashion of course.

Actually I sometimes wonder how many don't know what goes on when they press it.

Same noise on 1.4 90TSI  Comes and goes. Not too intrusive.

Same thing happened to me this morning, on a brand new 1.4 Yeti, only 5 days old. (I'll post pictures soon :)). I did a 200 km trip yesterday when I used the AC for the first time. No noise and also nothing today when I started. I went to some new place and got lost, turned off all the radio and navigation to ask someone for directions and when I closed the window I heard this wooosh-woosh sound coming from the dashboard. Put all temperature stuff on off, still goes on, only when the engine is off it stops. As I accelerate to 40-50km/h it goes into the background noise or if I have the radio on even at minimum I can't really notice it. But I really hope the AC is not broken after less than a week.

Hi all,

I started this thread originally and can now update you all.

It was the AC compressor, it was replaced under warranty free by Skoda and the noise has gone, running perfectly now.

Car was only 18 months old when fault developed so failed very early.

I was getting caught out as the noise was there even when the AC was off but it was the compressor.

Thank you very much for updating the thread with the end result.

Can I ask, is it the same noise I mention in the first post of this thread?

Myself and a couple of others are experiencing this noise on the Fabia/Ibiza so it would be good to know whether this is the noise that you have had fixed by your dealer.

Did they make you aware of any TSB's covering this?

Cheers

I will have a look through the thread and let you know.

Mine was worse on a dry, warm day and after car had warmed up. On a damp day it rarely happened which was odd.

AC on or off didn't matter, I turned the fan and everything completely off and the noise remained, that's why I was struggling to believe it was AC compressor but a Skoda mechanic had heard it before and was dead right.

Revs made no difference the noise didn't change loudness or pitch.

Hope this helps.

Mine is exactly same noise like in the first video.

Interesting correlation with the weather. Indeed yesterday, when I first noticed it, was warmer. After leaving the car parked underground at around 22 degrees the noise dissapeared but came back by the time I arrived home, outside being around 27. The weekend should be cooler and I'll see how it behaves. If it's present only in hot days, I can live with it since we don't have that many days with temperatures over 25.

I've listened to the video in the other thread, mine was not like that in the engine bay. It could only be heard in the car coming from the centre console area.

The Skoda mechanic but a stethoscope onto the AC compressor and was convinced it was that. Had it changed under warranty and noise has gone and not returned.

He didn't mention a recall of any kind but they fixed it no questions asked.

This is what my Yeti sounds like inside the car. I can't hear anything outside. Underground parking, all fans and music turned off.

https://youtu.be/fZIHlIMBfps

The sound started exactly when the engine reached 90 degrees. The sound is hardly noticed in real life traffic conditions. For comparison,  the recording was done with fans off, when setting the fans to 1/4 bar it is hardly audible and at 2 out of 4 fan intensity the fans cover the sound.

How are modern alternators cooled these days?.

Some BMWs are watercooled but the normal method was fixed fins on the pulley.

It would probably be influenced by the use of the cigarette lighter if it was to do with it......worth a try?.

Ive just had exactly the same issue with my yeti which ive only had a week! Will be booking it in for repair under the warranty i took out. Only concern is that as the original poster mentioned, the grinding noise stops in cold weather. I assume a decent garage will be able to inspect the ac compressor, without the grinding noise being there?
