Has any one had there gear linkage adjusted to solve the 1st to 2nd notchy gear change problem?

 

Im just looking into this as mine has a really poor shift when cold and when hot is marginally better, the car has done 2k so i don't think its worn sincros or anything of that nature.

 

any advise is gratefully revived

 

 

Not had the same problem as yours but mine had the full selector mechanism replaced under warranty as it was intermittently sticking in reverse, when it happened, even though I had selected 1st it would still be in reverse! Also, the shifter had started clunking while reversing on every occasion that I selected reverse.

I know this is probably not true but I do sometimes think some of the buts used in skoda have higher tolerances than parts in audi and vw. What I mean to say is if you take a standard deviation curve the parts close to being rejected get used in skoda and seats while the perfect ones go in audi and vw.

I know this is not strictly the case as I suspect there cross platform components have a very high Yeald, skoda make a lot of cars, how ever I still think poor part gets in skoda rather than audi.

I can't see an audi customer putting up with this, I have a number of colleagues who have a3 who have perfect boxes, this makes me suspicious. I know vw and audi do have notchy gear boxes too but I think there are more skoda owners that have this issue.

I think VAG has got to big too fast and they cant keep control of the quality. The diesel emission problem is an example. Also there were badly made timing chains failing on the older 1.4 TSi engines in the Golf. Another example of an organisation sourcing parts across the whole group, but not monitoring the quality.

 

Alpha have a word with your dealer about it, the service dept need to inspect and test it. I'd be looking for them to change the gearbox oil as a starter and see if that helps. If not then maybe adjust or replace this linkage.

Got a feeling there is some kind of adjustment as mine was better after first service than before - unless that is some kind of lube change?

I posted on a similar topic a while ago. Mine played up between 2-3 and 3-4, especially when cold. Take it to the dealer and get them to readjust the linkage - it only takes approx 30 mins for the dealer to reset - loads of videos on YouTube etc showing how it is done. Rigging pin is placed into gearbox to lock it in a neutral position and the cable linkages are then adjusted, pin removed.

And for the record this used to happen on my Mk5 Golf too.
