Vts/vr6

Featured Replies

My mate currently has a Saxo VTS and is looking to do a swap for a Glof VR6.....

What do you guys think of the VR6????

Well as they say --- I liked them so much I bought one!!

There not really a hot hatch -- more like a long distance cruising hatch

that said they are not slow -- and not too heavy on the juice - mine returns approx 27mpg.

And if your mate can hang on a couple of months mine will be for sale !!!

HA someone who has a VR6. Would you say that they would see off a VTS and how do they compare to the VRs

I honestly don't know - probably not, they only have 170ish bhp in standard form and are a lot heavier than a citroen, as I said you don't buy a VR6 for performance alone - sure they are quick especially 70+ (private roads only!) they are comfortable and handle reasonable -- but the best bit - is they sound great even with a standard airbox the 6 cylinder is sweat.

and certainly a hell of a lot more reliable than a citroen, but doesnt take mutch!!

Which do I prefer the vRS or VR6 - well I will miss the engine note, but as I said its a lot of car to haul around - this vRS is more direct and the performance more relevant to this country.

Nice cars. Has your mate not just considered a decat, cams, manifold and induction on his VTS, it'll be good for 150 bhp and with the weight will be scooby quick.

John's supercharged saxo (180 bhp) saw off an M3 at the drag strip to give you an idea of how fast they are.

As a complete package, I'd take the VR6. OK, it won't handle as well or be quite as quick as the Citroen, but they're better put together, more reliable and IMO have a better image.

Agree with the long-distance cruiser part, with that big V6 to make use of

Steve

I've had two Golf VR6s and also a brief spell in a Saxo VTS.

Going back a good few years now, to about 1998 I was happily running my Golf VR6, then there was this little car that suddenly got good reviews in the press and started selling rather well depite having a dodgy badge on the front (ehoes of Fabia vRS here) called a Saxo VTS. This little thing had the running gear of the much respected 106 GTI and was cheaper and had, back then, quite distinctive and sporty syling.

My VR6 needed a bit of paintwork sorting, was due a major service, MOT, and one or two other things needed sorting, so after having a look at a couple of VTSs I bought a silver one (silver was just catching on as being the 'in' colour then). It was light, nimble, had no torque what so ever at low engine speeds, plus the seats gave me back ache. After three months I chopped it in for an Ibiza TDI (hence my user name) and didn't look back. I tuned the Beezer TDI a bit, but they were still very new then and there was only a few expensive tuning boxes or non switchable re-chips back then, nothing to sort out the suspension that didn't give a crashy ride and the lure of a smooth, torquey, lovely souding, luxurious Golf VR6 came back to me - so I bought a nice, high mileage Dragon Green VR6. Actually I bought a MK2 Golf GTI to run about in before the second VR6, but the non-power assisted steering, heavy brakes and wooden accelerator pedal nearly finished me off as I had Glandular Fever at the time and wasn't at my best!!!

Basically all a Golf VR6 needs sorting is a decent set of gas shock absorbers, and it becomes a very complete car. The only way I can compare it to a Saxo VTS is that it feels much more grown up, more sure footed, solid, and a better complete package. Both have their strengths and weaknesses, and both are in a slightly different price and size bracket.

A VR6 needs to be driven smoothly, and you can just waft about on the torque with the stereo turned off, where a VTS is an up and at 'em car that needs revving and loves corners. I suppose in an ideal world you would want one of each depending on what sort of mood you were in.

VR6 every time! It's in a different league to the Paxo in every department. Yeh, the Citroen would prob get to 60mph a bit quicker, but in real world driving, the VR6 would be far superior.

Tell him to go for a Corrado VR6- even better than the Golf! 190 bhp as standard, with great looks and fantastic handling. 0-60mph in 6.2 secs if he's worried about that. Oh, and that sound...

Yup would agree with that - but to find a decent Corrado VR6 these days takes some looking.

Had my VR6 Highline for a couple of months now and think it's great. Sound is addictive.

That depends if you value a good driving experience over all else ;)

You cant knock French cars for driver appeal TBH.

Err,

What the **** wheel/tyre combos are u running? Those 'laggy bands look a wee bit 'stretched'!

John. ;)

Got that right - especially if said VR6 has a 57i intake kit as well :D

Running 9x16 et15 all round with 195/45/16 stretched toyo's for that euro look.

57i's sound good but i will stick with my ramair for now  but a decat and miltek do help

Some serious bracing going on there Monkey Boy

If I was keeping the Golf then thats probably where I would be going next,as it is I've got enough going on trying to decide wether to keep my Corrado 16V and carry on turning it into a trackday car, or get rid to free drivespace for the new vRS when it arrives,

As most people have said.....Has to be the VR!

That V6 motor is creamy smooth and the noise when you boot it......Ahhhhh!! Who needs stereos!

As Andy has said, Try and get a Corrado VR6, better handling, more power and a cool spoiler ;) But on the other hand finding a good one can be tricky, Failing the C, I'd be after a Late Highline with the cool leather and all the toys :)

I looked for corrado vr but could not find one in good enough condition without a over inflated price tag.

Happened to stumble across the highline on edition38 forum and for a 120k mile car it still drives like new but has had 4k spent on it this year by previous owner.

Plenty of braces skodaw for a reason. Front brace came on car along with fully polybushed everything plus neuspeed front and rear arb's. Rear seat was moving on mounts due to flex and causing some loud squeaks so fitted the rear brace to stop the flex. Worked a treat though. Nice and quiet now.

There have been quite a few good Corrado VR6's for sale lately on the Corrado Forum www.the-corrado.net

Now is definately the time to buy, the bottom seems to have fallen out of the second hand car market at the mo'.

I had a K reg VR6....lovely sound and well put together....as most have already more of high speed cruiser. Had mine lowered with Eibachs and adjustable Konis...very good and none of the wallowy standard ride/handling. Low dow torque ain't great either....but nothing a VSR manifold won't solve.;):D

Or just get the Corrado VR6...2.9 v6 and apparently has much better torque.

Ah...always wanted Corrado VR6 in Dusty Mauve.........

Mmmm, nice colour. Ice gray violet's nice too. Oh, and blackberry. Aqua blue pearl... hell, they're all nice apart from white ;)

Yes, get an induction kit, but whatever you do, don't locate it in the engine bay! The VR6 is a very hot engine, and the cone will just be sucking in loads of nasty hot air! This will actually reduce your BHP (although it sounds amazing!).

Get hold of some tubing and relocate it through the carbon canister hole, behind the front bumper. Really easy job and you don't have to delete the carbon can. It can be relocated beneath the MAF.

This will give a few ponies and some torque to boot
