Does park assist work with a manual box?

Featured Replies

Currently working out the options to spec on a new VRS that I'll be ordering in a few weeks and searching through the forum I think I've found all the answers except for this - does park assist work well with a manual box?  I've tried the DSG but much prefer a manual and quite fancy the park assist (I suck at parallel parking for some reason) but every video and thread I've seen has it working with the DSG box.

Anyone use it with a manual box, and if so how well does it work?

It's just the same. Regardless of gearbox you still have to select the correct gear, and you control the speed. Park assist just does the steering.

It is probably more controlled on an auto though as you're only controlling the brake

so you don't control the gear selector or the throttle.

Obviously you've got to move the selector from R to D and vice versa, but I've never used the throttle, only the brake to control the speed. No chance of stalling and causing the car to jerk like in a manual, that's what I was meaning in terms of more controlled.

Thanks guys, but has anyone used it with a manual box and can say is easy to avoid the jerks etc?

If you can drive smoothly normally with a manual then there is no difference...the car simply does the steering for you. If you have kangaroo clutch control then you'll get that whether you are steering or the car is steering!

Cool thanks guys

Does anyone actually use Park Assist in the real life?

It was on the car we got and it has been used maybe 5 times tops in a year 3 of those was to show friends how it works  :D  Is kind of neat though

I have this on my Yeti,  it is Manual & Yes it does work.

It is very disconcerting when you use it the 1st couple of times, till you get to trust the system.

We use the parallel park part of it  in our road as parking is awful, it is very useful for tight spaces where you are not sure if you can get in.

Works well on a manual 'box. You use the brake, accelerator and clutch as you would if you were parking manually. You just don't touch the steering wheel. Had my car for nearly three years now, used the park assist a couple of times when I first got the car but never use it now. Only purchased the option as when the Octavia Mk3 first came out it was the only way to get front parking sensors.

Like Tim, I also wanted front sensors which were not an option without PA at model launch and I can park in tighter spaces without using PA so from that point of view its a bit of a gimmick. However, you also get x4 additional side sensors with the PA which effectively give you 360° all round sensing which comes in useful for manoeuvring generally in tight spaces even when not using PA.

Oh, I like the idea of the side sensors - assume these show up on the screen like the front and back ones do?

Yes, although they can be annoying when reversing in very tight driveways where very close walling or hedges can send the side sensors ballistic!
