Unstoppable smoking!?

Featured Replies

Skoda Octavia I Ambiente 1.9 TDI Estate

On starting it smokes quite a bit of white smoke (with possible blue tint, hard to tell). This happens for about 10 minutes and then it clears. The smell while it is smoking is unpleasent, and it has failed emissions test. The mystery is that everything usual has been ruled out.

All injectors replaced, except the master injector.

Maf has been replaced.

Garage told us the turbo looks to be in excellent condition.

It burns no excess oil, and burns no excess water.

Several garages claimed to not have any clue what it was causing it, but did kindly offer to start replacing parts one by one at our expense until the problem stopped, which we didn't go for.

The car isn't worth much, and we have just upgraded so we are asking to try and fix it to sell on, if not it is going to the scrapper, which seems a shame as the car seems solid apart from this.

Thanks for yout time!

Greg

I would get it plugged into vcds to check the pump timing.

Does it do this Only when started from cold? (When engine is fully warmed up and then restarted after a few minutes does it still do it??)

The smell is unpleasant - That's not actually helpful. If you tell us that it's a smell of, say, Stinking Bishop cheese then that would let us start ruling things out.

White smoke isnt that head gasket. I know you said no waler loss but it has to be something. the only think you arent ruling out is overfuelling, which would be black/grey.

Is it just cold start or all starts ?Have you checked the glow plugs, the are very important post starting and can cause a lot of smoke on cold days if none of them are working. Possibly not for 10 minutes but its worth looking into

Coolant temp sensor.

White smoke is also characteristic of a very cold start on a diesel. I'd expect it to clear in seconds rather than 10 minutes if that was the case though, but still await the OP telling us what the smoke smells of.
