Scout wheel delamination, can anyone beat this?

Recommended Posts

The well reported delamination has certainly bitten my wheels, they've got 200k miles on them so no real surprise.

I'm going to use them as my winter wheels on my new scout and will be getting them refurbished soon.

Thought that it might be of interest to see how bad these wheels can get. Does anyone have a more impressive example?

Out of interest are there any recommended places to get wheels refurbed? My wife's Scout's wheels are pretty poor, especially on the front and it does somewhat take away from the rest of the car, and will no doubt impact resell value.

I have used both

http://www.diamond-wheels.net/

and

https://www.thewheelspecialist.co.uk/

in the past with good results, The first was cheaper but I don't know how many outlets they have, whereas more expensive The Wheel Specialists have outlets all over the country

I paid £220 and £292.80 respectively for strip, fit, balance and full refurb in anthracite for 4 wheels (17" summers at Diamond Wheels and 16" winters at The Wheel Specialists)

I never bothered getting the diamond cut / polished finish redone on ours.

After two full sets under warranty they all go the same way eventually.

Instead I went for a standard silver all over. That was a few years ago now and they are still immaculate.

Another benefit of the Scouts tyres (especially the Dunlop SP01 Sports) is that they offer great protection, they are all but impossible to kerb.

This was as bad as mine got before having them refurbed, I can't stand scabby wheels...

Do you remember this thread :D...

Stop using those hand car washes, the acidic wheel cleaner has stained your wheel bolt caps too!

Actually thinking back, the delamination was mainly out of sight on mine, the front passenger alloy was so badly corroded that it was loosing pressure. For some daft reason Skoda carried the polished effect all the way to the edge of the rim so everytime the tyres were changed all it would take was a small hairline scratch for the water to get behind and the white worm to start.

I've no pictures so I guess it didn't really happen (!) but our work's Scout was evey bit as bad as yours lard-ajc. In the end they were causing the tyres to loose pressure and I persuaded the powers that be to get them refurbed.

My own scout had wheels refurbed by the wheel specialist (Inverness). Seems to have done a decent job and like Silver1011 I went with plain silver.

Yes, for me that is the biggest curse of alloy wheels, long before the oxidisation and flaking finish gets as bad as the pictures here it is already bad enough to prevent a decent tyre to rim seal. This however is in the category of problems that no manufacturer will ever even be motivated to attempt to solve.

One thing that hasn't happened with mine is any pressure loss (other than the usual 1-2psi over the course of a couple of weeks)...

Next question I need to get figured out is whether I go for standard silver (without the polish) or a darker colour for winter... (car's black if anyone has any suggestions!)

I like my wheels bright, and as such anthracite or black is a no-no for me.

My Scout is black too and the contrast between body colour and silver is nice.

One if the great things about the Proteus is the ease at which they can be cleaned, 30 seconds with a sponge and they are done so even in the winter they are a breeze to keep clean.
