White exhaust fumes when engine is cold

Featured Replies

Evening all

So my three week old ( to me ) 07 petrol vRS low oil warning light came on today which got me worried however after adding a litre (it now registers on the dipstick) and doing some searching on here I gather they do drink a fair amount of oil! (I've done 2k miles in last 3 weeks which is v high for me but I've had a week driving around Scotland)

Anyway, it has reminded me to ask about another issue I have, white exhaust smoke for the first couple of miles with a cold engine.

Putting the two together has now got me worried! There's no obvious signs of oil leaks (around engine bay/on drive) but there is the white smoke (well I say white, it's more like steam in appearance)

So what issues could I be looking at? And what fixes?

(Oh and go easy on me, as you can tell I'm a mechanical numpty!)

Usually the white smoke is steam, as when the engine is cold the water condensation evaporates from the exhaust. In fact on a really cold day you might still see some steam emitting from the exhaust when you stop in traffic queues, even when the engine has warmed up. Nothing to worry about. Oil burning is usually blue smoke.

Thanks

I think (and hope!) I'm just being a 'nervous new daddy'. It's my first secondhand car where I don't know the previous owner/exact history, and anything odd is making me super nervous.

As always the worst thing you can do is look up symptoms on the Internet

Thanks

No problem my friend. Over numerous decades, too many to admit, I have messed with cars and slowly learned a a fair bit. Mind you, there are guys on this site who know far more than me and that is why I keep logging on, as well as the friendly banter of course. You never know what you will learn from the intelligent members who post on here. Slowly in time you will get up to speed with basic knowledge of motor vehicles. We all have to start somewhere.
