Road tax

Featured Replies

I think last time I did it you could use a reference number off the V5.

You are correct, just checked the car tax website and if you haven't got the reminder letter you can use the V5C, plus there are a couple of other options available.

Easier to just input the Registration number and Make Here

That doesn't appear to be anything to do with taxing a particular vehicle, just checking if it is taxed.

I thought that is what this thread was about!

^^ Totally the point, because if it is not on the DVLA Database showing as with VED even if £0.00 VED,

then a reminder to the Registered Keeper is Unlikely.

If you renew your road tax online they only check you have a MOT or need one they no longer check if the car is insured

DVLA seems to mail out the reminders around 8th of month for tax expiring that month

letter gives the car reg and a numeric code you enter on the website to tax it. Tax will start 1st of next month.

Can also tax in other ways, but might cost extra, and you need paper docs so online is easier and you get instant confirmation.

What if you're out of the country for a month before it's due? (As I will be this year.)

Assuming it will be off the road you could SORN it. Then reapply for it when you get back.

I use the local Post Ofice ( to keep them in business).

No paper documents required.

They are supposed to see your MOT but was told that the system will not allow them to tax a vehicle if there is no valid MOT !

No, I'll be driving it in France.

Setting up DD's and paying online is so handy.

I am waiting this morning for a MOT pass and then for the first time in yunks in need to visit the Post Office to get the Taxation Class changed by handing in the V5 with the declaration signed, and pay the money, and then it will be off the SORN.

I have been in already this morning to check and no V62 form or anything needed,

& a call yesterday to the DVLA was a revelation, a quick answer at the correct department and the surprise that my pre 2001 vehicle costs half that for the VED as my 2003 which has an identical engine.

Sometimes the UK System is so damn good.
