grrr stupid handbrake replacement cable won't go

Featured Replies

anyone else had a problem changing the handbrake cable? (drums)

managed to get everything apart - except the sodding end/nubbin won't pull through (out) from the inside, (yes its not connected) - had to cut it in half and pull it inside the car to get it out

There is a great big chunk of plastic on the end of the bendy tube that goes into the car... there also appears to be a "shim" inside this tube preventing me putting the new unstretched cable back in? its a bit awkward to get a drill in, does this bit come out? (the bit you can see inside the car)

anyone else had this issue?

Help asap as i need my car on the road!

Many thanks

bah - what a pain in the  proverbial... the end of the old handbrake cable was made of plastic, and that's what was stuck in there! #

complete bugger to get out! couldn't quite get the drill in, plus didn't want to damage the bendy bit

in the end i put the inspection lamp on it to warm the metal to expand it slightly and managed to grip on the remnants of the plastic to pull it out

top tip - don't buy the handbrake cables with  the plastic on the end!

refit with copper ease too!

Was your cable snapped?

Usual story I'm afraid and they all have plastic ends where it fits into the alloy tube. The tube corrodes and grips tighter so either gently drill them or melt them out if they have broken oak flush

Cable had stretched beyond all adjustment (I live in wales, even the down hills are up hill! Plus my drive is 35 degree... Plus I'm one of those ppl who "make sure" the handbrake is on... After owning a classic car that used to roll away!)

Managed to use combination of heat and drills to get the f%ker off, had planned to do both sides but run out of time, gonna try again today - if stops raining...
