What do we know about the Jaguar XF?

So later this year I will be getting a company car. I have a budget of £13k plus whatever I feel like putting in.

Some of my colleagues have chosen small, cheap, frugal cars to keep the tax bill as low as possible. However, the last year has taught me life's too short to drive around in a car I hate driving and can't stand the look of. My MD drives a Pug 308 FFS!!

I'd like a Jaguar XF and obviously at that price it won't be new. Likely to be 3 years old with around 50k on the clock. What are they like reliability wise?

I used to work for JLR writing technical bulletins so I'm probably fairly well in the know. Last of the old shape XFs are the ones to have.

What engine are you thinking about?

Probably 2.2d?

A mate at work has a 2011 diesel 3.0 V6 Sport. Think it has around 50,000 miles in it.

 

He loves it.

 

Only issues in the last year or so was the chrome strip on the boot eating into the paintwork, a loose rear boot spoiler and a faulty sensor on the washer bottle, all sorted under warranty.

 

It likes tyres too but that is probably more down to his driving style!

 

It has the same wheels as this one, and is black...

Oh, one of the chrome strips on the alloy wheel spokes fell off too!

 

I think the car is basically trying to tell him it doesn't want to be covered in chrome!

there are now 3 of them in the car park at work, 2 diesels and a petrol ( i don't know the technical specs, but the 2 diesels are 60/61 plate, and the petrol is one of the very early ones ) All of the owners are delighted, and none of them have had any problems whatsoever ( if they are to be believed that is ) I would have one tomorrow, if it would fit in my drive, I did a bit of research ( nothing too technical you understand ) and as Ross said, a 3/4 year old one would be my choice. Lovely inside.......

What is a realistic mileage to be buying at? Are they knackered at, say, 130k? Or are they good for 200k if looked after?

The 2.2 isn't a bad engine. Drive one first though, coupled to the 8 speed it's not to everyone's taste. My father in law liked his before he got a new XE.

I'd love a 3.0 but it pushes the tax above what I want to pay ideally.

Will it make a massive difference really ? £200 per annum extra tax is around £4 a week, roughly 65p a day, I spend that on coffee...

 That may sound flippant, but it all depends on how you look at things, unless I have missed something.

I'd have to work it out, which is no mean feat given that I have to find out what it cost to buy when it was new!

3.0 is better than the 2.7. EGR issues are fairly common.

At 4yr old they looks like a great buy. But nearly new they're pretty expensive.

Saloon not practical enough for me and the shooting brake just didn't float my boat.

Ah , company car tax etc, I don't understand that. I drive a bus, they cost upwards of £150k, and they are rubbish in almost every respect, don't buy a bus.....

 I'd better stop now before i say something silly.. ( too late was the cry..)

 Buy the Jag, if it doesn't suit, don't keep it, you will always regret not buying one, and if it turns out to be a mistake, you won't do it again. Makes sense to me.

Whatever I get I'm stuck with for two years but I'd be surprised if the Jag let me down, to be honest.

I just a quick calc on Parkers company car tax page, and a 3.0d Premium Luxury on a 13 plate is about £220 per month.

By contrast a 2.2d Premium Luxury on a 62 is £167. It's a lot extra per month....

It seems that there are different versions of the 3.0d

I just ran another calculation on a 3.0d with a CO2 figure of 159, comes out at £194 a month. Under £200 a month sounds so much better!!

Sounds like you are having a tough time or about to have one, best of luck, at least you won't have to worry about running a Jag. Every cloud etc etc....
