Problem with my Fabia 1.4 16v comfort

Featured Replies

Morning all,

First off I am sorry for the long post but really hoping someone could shed some light on my issue.

Basically I have had an issue with my car since january. It started with the EPC light illuminated with the EML also on fault codes at the time were a mixture but pointed mainly to EGR and MAP sensor. Garage replaced MAP sensor and cleaned EGR as I had a new one put on 12 months ago. Car was ok for a day then the same happened again car was also stalling at idle from cold until engine had warned up. Mechanic took another look and noticed alot of water in the engine comaprtment and sensors clogged with water gave it a good clean and dry out and was ok again for another day. Then following this the same happened again but this time car refused to start at all without flooring the gas pedal for 30 secs on start up which made the engine sound like it was about to blow haha. Anyway turns out the reason it wouldnt start was due to bad Coolant temp sensor so got that done. Also the engine appeared wet again so garage removed the engine loom overnight and dried it out completely and then fitted it all back in. This time car was perfect for 4 days no lights nothing than all of sudden when driving home from work on the 4th day the traction control light appeared on the dash but nothing else read the code and came up as 01314 then a few mionutes later the EPC and EML came back on again with fault code 17563 I am unable to delete both of these codes. Sometimes I also get code 16786 and also a 16710 knock sensor code. Both codes 16786 and 16710 can be deleted but do reappear eventually. Car starts ok but does not drive well it jerks when accelerating and also if you take your foot off the gas then put it back on again it also jerks when driving at 40/50mph it also jerks occasionally even without taking foot off the gas. When coasting or coming to a stop quickly the battery light comes on and car goes to stall sometimes it recovers itself but other times just stalls. Ive also noticed the car has been starting to smell quite strongly of petrol but I suppose this could be due to the engine getting wrong signals from somewhere. I have spent quite a bit on this car now so hoping someone has had a similar problem that can help.

Thank u

Depending on whether your engine is an AUB or a BBZ (check on the label stuck to the boot floor under the carpet) I strongly suspect you have a failure on the HT, either replace the spark plugs, leads and coil pack if AUB or the spark plugs and coil packs if BBZ.

The EGR fault is caused by deposits blocking the EGR gas flow into the plenum, you'll need to clean all this gunk out of the throttle body, plenum and EGR pipework.

Sorry to sound dumb but what is a HT? It is an AUB engine

HT leads are the wires that carry the high-voltage energy to the spark-plugs.

Here's a picture where they are red, yours may well be less colourful.

The (black) coil pack on the right, where all four leads go to is where the high voltage energy comes from

HT is High Tension, the HT side of the ignition system is not monitored by the ECU and in the case of the AUB gives lots of problems which is why VW changed to the BBZ with individual coil packs for each cylinder.

I strongly suggest you replace the whole lot, plugs, leads and coil pack.

Thanks Wino thats exactly what mine looks like would this account for the strong petrol smell in the engine

Well, if the engine is misfiring due to spark not occurring sometimes, the fuel that has been injected will not be burnt, so your exhaust will smell of petrol.  Not quite sure how the engine area itself could smell of fuel, unless you have a leaky exhaust joint at e.g. the flexible coupling under the engine (quite common, I believe)?

Sorry my bad it is from the exhaust I was stood in an enclosed space at the time hence why it smelt like it was from the front. Got car in tomorrow to get plugs replaced and wires checked

Just replace the lot, they don't last and dodgy plugs/leads usually damage the coil pack.
