GPS TOM OR GARMIN ?

Featured Replies

Just acquired Fab 111.

Decided against factory GPS. Not been impressed with any factory fitted units over the last 4 car changes.

Think will go for a stick on version of either a Tom-tom or a Garmin unit.

But with such a large choice of model and manufacture wonder if anyone else

has gone down this parth recently ?

Would much welcome any input also best place to install.

Anyone please ?

Bought a TomTom Start 50, 5" screen. Free map updates for life, does what I need and you could spend weeks comparing all the models. Purchased from Halfords for £99.99 day before they went to £119.99. Only thing to watch out for...and no info on the box...is what software you need to handle updates. Same with Garmin. Do your research first. My trusty Macbook Pro runs OS 10.6.8 and TomTom needs min of OS10.7 so have to use another Mac. TomTom's response to this was basically "Tough titty, take it back to the retailer. Your software is obsolete. We will consult our technical dept about including software needs on the packaging". As though it were a big deal. Kit is fine but customer service can be very flaky.

Will be mounted on a Brodit bracket and clip over the dashboard centre vents...but not blocking the vents. Leaves no tell-tale rings on the windscreen, is easily mountable/demountable, no vibration, in easy reach and doesn't fall off. Been using Brodit mounts for years. Not the cheapest, but possibly the best.

Was tempted to go for the Garmin Nuvicam with built-in dash cam but near £300 was a step too far.

That's my input.

If your car has the Bolero radio, you can plug in your mobile and use the sat navigation on that.

You can also retrofit sat nav Garmin to the radio for £599 at your Skoda dealer.

i prefer Garmin nav's personally.

Use one on the bike and its great. Had a few before this one n never had a problem.

Using other friends advice, I bought TomTom GO6000, nice big screen and just temporarily mount it on a TomTom weighted thing, I use three cars so I don't want to fix it on permanently - or nicked.

At the end of the day, I'd reckon both will send you down some strange roads sometimes, normally you end up being a person that can live with one or the other - it is just getting it right for you first time as they both should be competing with each other.

Or you can get the Pioneer unit like this cheaper and works very well
