Car judder between 1500 rpm and 2200 rpm

Featured Replies

So since yesterday when I drive and accelerate in gears 2,3 &4 I get a judder between that rev range.

Is it DMF?

It clears after 2200 and is sweet on the motorway at 70mph.

1.9 DSG 105bhp bxe

How much is a DMF & clutch replacement on this car?

Sounds like the clutch starting to slip at max torque revs.

It doesn't do it all the time. Just sometimes but feels like the engine is wobbling. Could it be a mount?

The car still pulls and doesn't look like the revs are slipping.

The clutch starting to let go at max torque need not show a noticeable increase in engine speed but you will hear/feel a deep rumble.

Put some fuel cleaner in the tank and floor it from low RPM through the gears and you'll probably start to notice it more as the engine performance usually perks up a bit.

I took it to an auto transmission specialist in Birmingham and he couldn't replicate the vibration.

And it hasn't happened since!

He said, it might be the inner CV joints, as they tend to cause a vibration when they start showing signs of wear.

Could this be it?

It's been okay since.

What fuel cleaner do you recommend?

I just had an oil change too just in case it helps.

Thats the rev range for the Turbo resp. the EGR, guess an air leak,....is the big hose on the left side from the engine correct fitted, does it show any oil leaks like mine did...see pics with oily small holes...I have had the same issues...after fitting a new hose, everything was fine.

I usually use Redex diesel system cleaner a couple of times a year at double dose.

An oil change might liberate a few extra horsies and that extra strain would perhaps highlight a clutch on the way out.

Thanks for the pictures, I will have a look after work tonight as long as I can get out whilst it is still light.

The problem happened again yesterday, but only when I had full load in the car.

When I am on my own, it doesn't seem to do it. It needs at least 3 people in the car. Very strange.

The extra load is highlighting the weak clutch, nothing strange about it.

So no sign of leak as such.

It feels as though the car is shaking and it did it when I was on my own today as soon as I put my foot down it starts shaking.

Would it still be clutch? Skoda quoted £900 for a clutch change.

It will eventually get worse until you cannot help but notice the engine speed increasing without the usual increase in road speed.

It will then sound like an automatic where engine speed is not directly related to road speed.

At idle in N or D do you hear any rattles? (aside from the diesel engine noise of course!)

Listen closely shifting between N, D and R for any clunks or rattles.

Does the engine sound noisier when it judders? Any smoke from the back?

I'm not entirely convinced it's clutch or DMF related as either of these causing such a bad judder I would expect some other obvious issues with it.

When was the last time the fuel filter was changed? And any signs of fuel leak round the filter housing?

  • Author

No rattles, no vibrations in N when at idle or revving.

The gear changes are smooth, just had the dealer do a gearbox oil & filter change.

Engine sounds the same, no excess smoke. Turbo still pulls well.

I need to check the service book to find out when the fuel filter was last changed, but i couldn't see any leaks around the engine bay at all.

It's really odd. I had someone from Driver Transmissions, take it out on a test drive, who said it can't be the gearbox or clutch. He suggested it may be inner CV joints, but why would the drive shaft work differently with load? Is that correct, when more people in the car, the drive shaft works harder?

The car does feel wobbly when the vibration starts to come through and the passengers can feel it too.

D-OH!

Just reread it's a DSG...

Forget what I wrote, it's only applicable to manual transmission.

Funny how you can read what you want to read.

Not a problem.

At least I am started to get re-assured that it's not a clutch issue.

How do I find out if it is the driveshaft?

  • Author

I have given the car in for a fuel filter change. The mechanic suggested there could be a DMF issue.

Now I am confused. The skoda dealer service chap suggested there is no DMF on these DSG gearboxes, and said there is just a 'multi tronic clutch'.

What is he on about?

  • Author

I guess I could try clean the EGR too, but I don't get a load of smoke out the rear.

The guy at the garage said, not to change the fuel filter as it is unlikely to be that, so he is goes to check to see if any codes come back and he will check to see if there is any play on the drive shafts.

He again could not replicate the vibration.

I will pick it up shortly after work and see if he has managed to find anything.

I don't know what the Skoda service chap was on about then. It's a bit worrying that he is quoting that there is no DMF?

I see darkside developments in barnsley do the DMF for £295 and then fit for another £240 + Vat. I guess £600-£700 is what I should expect from an independent garage?

This is even stranger. This weekend, the car didn't have such a harsh vibration/judder feeling. It feels like it is starting to go away and it is a very light hesitation/judder.

I've had a full load and been driving up hills, and it didn't happen. It's really confusing now, and really don't have a clue to work out how and what is going on with it.

On Saturday, I did have some smoke come out the back when I was putting my foot down a little, but since then, not much smoke to be honest.

any thoughts?

Possible that there's been an oil clog in a pipe that has worked its way loose?

  • Author

Hmm, but I did have an oil change the other day.

Did they do a full flush though?  If all they did was drain the block and refill it may not have affected any oil pipe lines.

  • Author

Ah right, it was just a drain and refill.

It's back with the mechanic today, to see if he can replicate it today. I will catch up with him during my lunch break to see if he has managed to replicate the problem again.

Btw, how old is your airfilter?
