Rear Brake Light

Featured Replies

I've been through about three sets of rear brake light bulbs on my 2001 Octy estate in 18 months.

I recently changed yet another bulb and this one stays on brake mode when the lights are turned on.

Any ideas?

Faulty brake switch...at end of brake pedal.

The switch was changed last year.

I guess I should have said that only one (1) brake light (RHS) is on all the time the lights are on.

The other (LHS) and the LED work as they should do.

I've just been out into the car park with a 'co-worker'.

It turns out that, when no lights are on and the brake is on. The LHS side brake light is bright, the RHS is on but dim.

When the lights are on and the brake is off. The LHS is on, dim, the RHS is bright!

It looks to me like the bulb I just put in is working the wrong wat around.

I have never seen this before....is it me?

Sorry if the 'co-worker' thing upset anyone, should have said 'work mate'

I thought that the pins on dual-element bulbs were at slightly different heights, to prevent it being possible to put the bulb in wrong, but maybe you've managed to put it in wrong?

Try taking the bulb out and checking that it's in the right way - if you look carefully you'll see that one pin is about 1mm higher up than the other - match that to the bulb holder when you put it back in. It should twist in easily if it's the right way 'round, and be harder to twist if it's wrong.

I will have a look a lunch time, it should be a little warmer by then, I hope.

Yep fraid so, i see many cars like this, just take the bulb out, turn through 180 degrees and put it back in again - all willl be ok.

Didn't you check it when you replaced it??
