2006 - critical year for WRC!

Featured Replies

WRC has been dead and buried for years - no surprises with any of the withdrawels really.

S2000 is seen more and more as the future of world rallying.

I would love to know if the change to the 3 day format (in real terms) actually saved the teams money. I am old enough to remember RAC rallies that ran from Sun till Thurs...a real test of man and machine not a sprint!

The cars were far less sophisticated, but it was more fun to watch!!! and they did not cost upwards of £750k each!!!

I had not acted as a marshall for over 10 yrs until I went out on the Grisedale Stages recently.....the majority of cars were 4wd.......and the track was ripped to shredds with huge ruts when we drove out....far more tha I used to encounter 10 yrs ago.....thus the Forestry Commission charges will increase...entry fees go up etc and everyone stops rallying.

Besides that aspect the new FIA rules concerning use of FIA approved seats, fire extinguishers etc means that these items now cost more...once again cost increase.

A couple of years back I was on a flight from Stanstead to Manchester, and Malcolm Wilson was on it...even back then he was saying that they could not compete in budget terms with Citroen! Perhaps a lot of the manufacurers pulling out but 'assisting' non works entries may slow down the pace of deveoplemnt and bring the costs down.

Just a few thoughts I had

excuse the ignorance on this - but what is S2000?, I presume it's some sort of "economy specification" but know no more.

Super 2000 - a bit like JWRC but with 2 litre non turbo lumps instead of the 1.6 lump used in JWRC.

As an aside The Forestry Commision and the MSA have negotiated the cost for forest use to remain the same this year as below.

The rates per mile for Special Stage Rallies (including Multi-Use and Historic Special Stage Rallies) are:

bl**bly hell, when I dabbled in rallying, admittedly 27 years ago, it was something like 10p per car per mile. Mk1 escort Mexico may not have been as fast as todays cars but it was fun and spectacular!!!

There were huge negotiations last years as they wanted to charge
