Driving abroad - headlights

Featured Replies

Hello all,

With the Bi-Xenon headlights and the option in the Infotainment system to apply the driving abroad function ... is this sufficient legally in France without sticking the manual deflectors on the front?

Thanks

Yes it’s all you require.

Not only is it sufficient, but mine auto-switched from driving-on-the-left to driving-on-the-right without my intervention in the menu.

Someone else has said theirs did not, but mine definitely switched of their own accord both after arriving in France and upon return to the UK.

Just got back from a trip to Valenciennes in northern France and my lights switched over on their own and when you started the car there was a display to tell you that the lights were set for 'right hand road driving' or words to that effect. Did not drive it at night so don't know how they performed.

Bit annoying that the clock did not change automatically!

The French loved the car btw got loads of admiring looks and thumbs up.

Although it would be a nice feature if the clock changed automatically, I can imagine it would be very annoying for people who do these kind of journeys on a regular basis. But they could have added it as an option in the menu off course...

At the parking lot at work a new Superb was parked next to a new Tesla, surprisingly the Superb drew a crowd :D

I do these sort of trips on a regular basis, nearly every other weekend for the next three months and it would not annoy me,

annoys me that is does not change automatically though!

But what if you passed a "border" twice a day. Would you still change your clock twice a day? but, it definitely should be an option (and as the time is coming from the gps system, I'm surprised it isn't). Maybe programmable through VCDS?

Is the bi-xenon auto switch still just dipping both beams down (they're Z shaped beams, so this is how it was done for the last decade or so)?

If yes, then for any serious nighttime travel, having ordinary xenons (as opposed to adaptive, not sure if SIII now has both options) manually set to "flat beam" inside the headlamp is much better and safer, as you see both sides of the road adequately both home and abroad. Turning a Z-beam down on a UK car leaves right hand side of the road well under-illuminated.

I want the clock to show the correct time for the country I am in, if this is automatic as on your mobile phone then great, having to keep changing it manually is a pain,  wouldn't take much to link it to a phone signal or a sattelite I am sure.

It does the same as it did on my bi-xenon S2, it flattens the nearside (left) kick-up. It doesn't lower the beam on the S3 and it didn't on my S2. I certainly had no issues with the lights during hours of darkness whilst in Germany over Christmas.

Smart Light Assist (if fitted, which I have) becomes normal Light Assist, so auto-dipping instead of beam adjusting.

According to the manual AFS is disabled, but on my last trip abroad the beam adjustment on bends appeared to be working (which is something my S2 did not do) so it's probably just the speed related focusing part of AFS that is disabled.

Do you have the time source set to GPS?

If you press MENU > click on the cogs > time & date > clock time source > GPS. I discovered the option after adjusting daylight saving time in October. That should give all the information it needs.

Not driven abroad to see if it works though!

It doesn't work. I had mine set to GPS but still needed to go into the menu and set Timezone GMT+1.

Not a big issue, but it does seem lame when both ACC and lights auto-switch by location that something as simple as a clock needs to be done manually.

Btw, I asked a local official Skoda repair shop and they said (without hesitation) that Eurolites were the way to go....

Eurollites may be suitable for use with halogen lamps but serve no purpose with the bi-xenons, which the OP has.

Actually the Tesla is also sensible and fun. I dare you to find a car with sub 3 seconds 0-60 times and the bootspace of a Tesla. But on the other hand, you could have +- 4 full option L&K 280's for the price of 1 tesla :D
