driverless lorries on m6 whatever next

Featured Replies

Nothing wrong with the concept and having trials.

So how do the vehicles get to and from depots to the Motorways?

I take it drivers will be required, then there is the roping and sheeting.

So the UK Government thinks they can cut more jobs and that Amazon and other Transportation Companies can Pay Taxes (Not!) on extra profits from lower overheads while not paying PAYE to Employees in the UK.

The Remote Controllers / overseers can be someplace else in the world.

I don't think that's the plan. I saw something similar before and all the wagons had a driver and worked as usual except when on the motorway when they form up and tailgate each other and are controlled from the front.

'Simply Clever', It used to work and can again.

Trains, Railways, Rail Heads and Distribution Centrers like they were planing already and then last mile or 5 mile delivery by

low emission vehicles, ie EV or Hydrogen.

Reduce heavy traffic on the roads, use the rail network.  Containers, and Wagons on the same setup as they come across the channel in the Tunnel, and then move them north by Train.

Just as happens now often, but the Government can improve the infrastructure instead of always flying kites about the road networks.

Supermarkets were running containers between Perth and Inverness on the Rail Lines and taking HGV's off the A9,the Government never backed it enough financially.

Works fine for stuff you import and break down, less good for 20T of muck or reinforced concrete for example, especially when moving between remote sites not on the rail network and avoiding double or triple handling.

Looking forward to Platoons of HGV's heading to remote sites sometime soon then.

They might be like the Convoys of Wind Turbine Transporters sat up in lay-bys for days waiting to get to their destinations.

It can work perfectly well in a country with competent Governments and Government Agencies.

So that rules out the UK.

No. Convoys of lorries controlled in formation won't work in all situations, neither will rail. Just being anti doesn't help.

Actually if this approach could work beyond just motorways then it could be useful for things like muck shifting. You can have say 200 loads of muck being moved by 2-5 wagons over several days. Would it be better for them to all run in convoy? Would save fuel etc compared to them running independently? Or would the standing time and potential for doubling handling counteract this?

Not sure on who is being Anti other than the Anti's.

George Osborne MP is providing cash money and incentives for trials so it must be all positive,

or there is some alternative reason like looking pro EU and technologies from manufacturers in Europe.

You can kid some of the people some of the time.

I can see the Headlines now....

...."Whiplash scam driver does emergency stop on M6 in front of Lorry...causes 10 lorry crash mayhem."

So. Is the idea that when you catch up with another lorry you press a button and it takes over?

If so. Will that stop them all trying to overtake eachother all the time, or will they just compete for lead vehicle?

I don't see why so many people are being negative about this. Lorry drivers are already tired and not paying attention, or racing each other clogging up two lane motorway/A roads. This is a huge improvement in safety and reducing frustration.
