Top speeds

Featured Replies

What are the top speeds of the S3 models, and has anyone here tested them?!

All I know is that the 280PS is limited to 155mph, no idea how much quicker it would go without the limiter.

Have a look at the online brochure.....its all there!

I've wondered about this. Had a look around to see if anyone had the limiter off on a Cupra or Golf R but can't find anything.

Goodness, even this 2.0 150 barge can do 136 mph. That's quite fast...

Would those be speedometer readings or real speeds? There's a huge difference once you get up there. How ‘speedometers’ can still be so inaccurate in this high-tech age is beyond me. It’s a joke.

Yes the 280 is limited to 250 km/h, but again, is that linked to the speedo or actual speed? Presumably the former, therefore in reality making it, what, 235 tops.

Either way I would expect the stated figures to be pure theory … and in any case of course rather meaningless – even in Germany.

I will be going to Germany in a few days, but will probably not push a still new engine to that extent even if conditions were to permit it, which normally isn’t very often.

PS: I once had a speedmeter reading of about 136-7 mph on my old S2 170 TDI! Clearly way off anything realistic.

Even my old S2 2.0 TSi can reach 147 mph, & that's before the remap......

If you have a portable GPS, IE a Sat-Nav or a Smartphone, use that to check the accuracy of your speedometer.

Our cars show a consistent 2 mph over-read from bout 30 mph upwards.

My old vRS was showing 120 mph in Germany, but 118 mph on the Garmin.

I'd expect a 2.0 petrol to be faster than a diesel. I don't expect to get to the top speed myself unless I can persuade the family to let me this summer (also going to Germany). Maybe I can sneak out early one morning....

I do indeed!

I bet it will do 140 mph..

If the manufacturer states it does it then it has to. Shame the same rules don't apply to mpg!!

It also surprises me that the calibration test spec still says +/- 10% @ 30mph even in this new fangled age of digitally derived signals, although tyre wear will throw 'true' speed out compared to 'indicated' speed.

I would have though it would use GPS/Galileo (once in service) with a back up in case of signal loss. That probably adds £0.50p to the price so it doesn't happen. With Satnav installed the data should be there anyway?

What are the options in the UK of somewhere one could test the top speed legally? I presume there are tracks where you can pay to try out your car.

Just drive overnight, the ride is so comfortable the other ones will be asleep...

Plenty of air fields in the UK for say the 280cup versions problem is on a Max speed run, you need that extra power to get up to 120mph ish in quick time or you will run out of road.

Germany is the best solution. Can't beat an autobahn stormer !
