Swapping alloys?

Featured Replies

Im sure this has already been asked but can't seem to find it in the mk3 forum. I'm picking up my sel on Saturday and wanted to upgrade to the savio 17 alloys rather than the 16 rock. I know I could have done that but I was told any upgrades would delay getting the car, which as I'm currently carless is prtletty urgent.

So is it easy to do? Are there any settings that need to be changed?

I would assume - You would just have to buy the new alloys and tyres and get them fitted. The tyre profile difference should make up for the difference in alloy size so no settings should need to be changed.

Shop around a few dealers for the alloys, prices vary. Its £600 worth of wheels so should be able to get at least 10% off.

Tyres also shop around.

Wouldn't your dealer fit them and give you a rebate for the original ones?

It's worth an ask on Saturday! Thanks for the suggestion.

I would have made them include it in the deal for the factory upgrade price.

They can order and fit the bigger alloys at the dealer.

This wouldn't have caused any delay.

Would it be best to try out the 16" wheels before buying 17"?  You may decide that the harder ride with the 17" wheels wouldn't be tolerable.  Am I right in thinking that the SEL already has firmer springing than the SE?

We will be keeping to 15" wheels for the Fabia that we'll be ordering soon.  The original Fabia had 14" as standard and its ride / handling compromise was fine.  A move up to 15" is as far as we'd want to go for this size and type of car, which is why we'll be buying a well-specified SE rather than an equivalent-cost SEL.

Unless you know they've got them in stock I'd ask today so they can do the change at PDI or at least before you've driven it away.

From experience I doubt the Dealer will be that keen to do a swap as they'll be left with a set of 16" alloys they'll need to unload somehow. It's not as if they can order a car without any wheels to put them on ;-)

Regards Bob

If you never ask you never get

Dealerships do get customers cars or stock cars in with wheels a customer might not want

So by coincidence or luck they may have a Customer that decided getting their car with 17's was an error. No harm or damage done in asking. It happens often and there are helpful dealerships and employees around.

They are looking into it for me and will let me know. :) Either way my fabia has arrived and I will be picking up Saturday!

The dealer got back to me. They can do it for an absolutely ridiculous £1200. Bearing in mind I can buy them from another skoda dealer for 900 it seems even more ridiculous.

Anyone know roughly what a set of new rock alloys with tires might fetch?

This is all about personal preference but I would have to be seeing some very real benefits to be laying out that sort of cash on a modest road car.

Tyre replacement cost - higher.

Ride quality - possibly worse.

Chance of damage to wheels - probably greater

Improved handling on-road - marginal at best

Nothing there to convince me, I'm afraid. If you really just want Black alloys then get your 16"s recoloured at a specialist for £50-£60 a corner and a couple of days off the road. 99% of people won't even notice. My Fabia has a Panoramic Roof and it's effectively invisible from the outside. But it makes a world of difference on the inside...which is where I sit.

Just an old guy's opinion, and we're all different.

Obviously the dealer isnt interested in doing it, so they quote you top price.

I'd run it for a few months, make sure you have a good car.

Original skoda alloys are expensive.

Have a look at the alloy and tyre sets on www.mytyres.co.uk expect you can get a nice set delivered for £500.

They work with the tyre pressure system as it monitors the wheel speed, no special valves.

I had the 17 inch alloys swapped for 16 inch steel wheels with more rubber less than a week after I picked up my 1.2SEL. I personally found the 40 profile X 17 far too harsh. Admittedly it was also to get winter tyres on but the ride quality was improved significantly. Looks aren't everything. If only I could do the same on my Superb V6.

Thanks everyone. I have applied a bit of pressure and said I want them for a 600 upgrade cost max. If it happens great, if not your probably right, I'm better driving it for a bit and seeing how it is.
