Columbus USB

If I transfer all my iPod/iTunes music files onto a 64GB USB memory stick can I just leave it in the USB slot for music playback?

Still waiting for my S3 so trying to cover the bases before it arrives.

Why not copy them onto an SD card and use the SD Card slots on the Columbus?

Thanks Prykey...like I say I haven't got my hands on the car yet so open to all suggestions. Cheers, Phil.

We used a memory stick in the rented Octavia (Bolero) last year, if we'd known that we would get an Octavia for our holiday we would

have bought a pre-loaded SD card instead!

Unless you want to use the USB slot for a phone or anything else, you can plug your iPod into the USB and control it through Columbus (using screen touch or voice commands), thereby negating any need to transfer your music.

Depending on iPod model you can also connect it wireless using Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.

If you really want to transfer your music then your options are a USB stick, an SD Card, burn an MP3 CD/DVD, a USB hard drive, or a Wi-Fi enabled hard drive.

You also have approximately 10-12 GB of internal (SSD) hard drive space for music/video. It's now called the "Jukebox" and is handy for transferring your favourites onto it in the event you forget to bring your iPod.

I have just transferred 10gb onto my jukebox. Took around 2 hours. Really easy- settings- manage jukebox-import- then tick what you want.

Like everyone has said- using the 1 usb port in the centre console to always keep a memory stick seems a waste. I think 11 gb music is enough but have bought a 64gb sdhc card from eBay for £5 to stay in the port in the glovebox to house different music and movies

Thanks guys I have over 32GB of music on my iPod so maybe just plug that in or transfer the files to an SD card.

Cheers for the help :)

I would say SD is the most convenient in terms of the car and maintaining files on it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you have to make Mp3 versions in iTunes and then copy to the SD or USB.

Download the Columbus manual and have a read.

I've copied files straight from my iTunes library onto an SD Card with no conversion and it works fine  :)

Just remember that the Columbus has a limit of 1000 tracks.

Copies of both the vehicle and infotainment manuals are available by way of this link http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/356477-manuals/

We keep his 'n her SD cards in both cars, + a few GB of music on the hard drives.

Still prefer to listen to the original CD's too, so there are a few kept in the car, + concert DVD's too.

The Columbus can read virtually all the common digital audio formats so long as they are not DRM protected.

The 1,000 limit is per folder.

The total limit is not specified. The files are pre-scanned by Columbus when a new storage device is connected and it's been my experience that it struggles with any card, stick or drive that has a total of over 10,000 audio files. A message pops up that it cannot read some files and when trying to select a file or folder beyond the scanned range it also raises error messages.

An iPod is not affected as Columbus does not need to scan it.

As long as i can connect my Record Player and fire up some cool LP's, I'll be happy

£5 for a 64gb? What class is it ? Got a link ?

for £5 from eBay, 64GB I suspect it maybe a fake card.

Stick with a recognised trusted reseller like mymemory where you can get 64gb for £13.85 for the cheapest.

I still think the internal hard disk is a bit useless. 11GB of music isn't alot and you need external media to get it on there anyway. I now have a 64GB USB which I will plug in the back USB-slot. And if ever needed, I'll add SD-cards as well.

Thinking about it, with the powerplug and usb next to eachother, I could mount a externally powered USB drive in the back with all the music I could ever want!

Hi BillyJim, a quick question then about this 1000 track limit, on my SD Card I currently have a folder for arguments sake called "Music" and below that a folder for each artist in which there are sub folders for each album. I get the 1000 limit warning at the moment and I understand why, are you saying that if I remove the folder "Music" and just have a folder per artist with sub folders of Albums I would be OK?

Example below

From an IT-perspective, I'm guessing that should work. probably the list of files/folders in any folder should not be + 1000 entries. If you have over 1000 artists (or possibly 1000 albums, depending on the filesystem).

iTunes tells me that I have a total of 1062 Albums with a total of 10774 songs

The car is well organised for music playback and charging. I use the second SD card slot with a 32gb card in it with my all time favourite stuff on it. Then I use a 16gb memory stick in the front slot which I swap stuff around with other stuff when the mood takes me, if you go for the new mini size sticks the lid closes without touching it and music is all stored in FLAC format. You can even resort to Bluetooth should you need it.

I also use a 12 volt dual usb plug for charging phones in the front. The best thing is it's all hidden away, not trailing wires, very neat.

In the back I use a Bestek 12 volt inverter which provides a 13 amp plug socket and two usb sockets for the kids tablets and phone charging needs, only cost about £12 from Amazon, and it still leaves the usb socket free should you need it. All works a treat and everyone is happy.

I think you're more likely hitting the @10,000 total limit.

Nesting folders isn't a problem, at least not one I've encountered.

By example I had a folder called "Tracks" in which I put one or two of my favourite tracks from across all my albums. It came to just over 1,400 files and Columbus didn't like that. By splitting them evenly into two nested folders "Set 1" & "Set 2", with about 700 files in each, it quite happily read them all.

I'm no expert on the matter but it appears Columbus reads all the files on a device to create the menus "Album", "Artist", etc. It writes an XML file to the device with a reference ID, so I figure the results of the scan are written in the OS part of the SSD and referenced by the XML file.

It's this pre-scanning that seems to be imposing the 10k limit.

Try deleting a few albums/artists from the SD Card to bring it below 10,000 and also delete the XML file to force Columbus to rescan the card.

Thank you, I'll give that a try :)

Strangely enough my Brother has the Amundsen unit in his Mk3 Octavia VRS and that unit doesn't appear to have this limitation or at least it doesn't flash up the warning.

I will be trying my Chinese sd card tonight and let everyone know. Plus- it was actually £4.75.

Really don't see the need to use a usb when the sd card would be hidden away?
