Replacement locking wheel nut tool

Featured Replies

I had to stick my spare wheel on today after getting a flat tyre. However as I was tightening up the locking wheel nut I have managed to chew up the star pattern on the tool for it. So I wont be able to undo the bolt anymore when I need to put the other wheel back on tomorrow after the puncture is fixed. Is this a standard pattern locking nut and I can just pick up a new tool from the dealers? Obviously I need to get a new one A.S.A.P. If its a dealer jobby, does anyone know roughly what they charge for a new one? I know most people wont have been as stupid as me to break theirs, but I'm sure some people will have mislaid theirs and needed to source a new one. Cheers.

Obviously there is more than one key. They should be able to match yours from their workshop master sets and order one in.

Isn't there a letter stamped on it?

I had this problem last October when I put my winter wheels on. One locking nut would not shift. I took it to the Skoda dealer who said "no problem". They could not shift it. I took it to a car tyre / exhaust fitter who said "no problem I have removed 4 stuck on locking nuts this week". 30 minutes later he could not shift it. He had a kit for this with socket that had to be hammered into the nut but would come loose. He had to drill it out. Cost £25. I was relieved to be rid of them. My locking wheeel nuts are now standard wheel nuts and I will not use them again. Any future cars of mine will have them removed and made standard.

Those are just one type. There are three different sets.

Yanno what i mean though.. if anyone really wanted to steal wheels, they'd have that set too.

Not really stopping many people is it haha :D

Do people even bother stealing wheels these days?

Theres another point.

Certainly not off a Fabia, or any Skoda i wouldn't expect :D

Never the less, i guess it gives you an extra sense of security from the normal scumbags.

Ok thanks guys. Maybe i'll just see if they will take the old bolts off and replace them with normal bolts. That will make life easier in the future.

Yep, Skoda will take my locking nuts off and stick regular bolts on. That was a really expensive puncture though as they are gonna charge about £55 for doing that and my puncture can't be repaired, so I need a brand new tyre too! All because of a frickin screw!

Skoda charge a fortune for bolts! The 4 bolts you're getting will be over a tenner. And they're robbing you for taking the locks off to.

Paying labour for someone to do it I guess.

Yeah, the bolts are about a fiver each and the rest is their labour charge.

My cunning plan is to take the wheels off once every year and check/clean brakes and wheel inner and hub face - applying a small smear on copperease, and cleaning the threads of all the bolts. Also using a torque wrench to nip up the bolts.

This tends to mean that when and if you have a puncture, you have a good chance of getting the wheel off.

Actually, on my car and wife's car this job gets done twice a year due to us using winter tyres etc.

Yeah good idea. Fortunately I had all my wheels off before winter to paint the hubs and brake drums, so the wheel came off nice and easy when I needed to get the spare on in a hurry.

So are you saying that you must have over tightened the wheels when you took them off before winter, and it was that that caused this problem with the security bolt adaptor?

Edit:- correction, I see that you accidentally wrecked the security adaptor putting that wheel back on.

I sort of think that these latest McGard type security adaptors are probably more secure than the splined earlier versions, but I'd rather have the earlier ones for durability.

Yeah, I chewed up the locking nut key when putting the bolt back on. Seem to be made from a fairly soft material. Will be glad not to have to bother with them anymore

I had to buy a locking nut key for mine. Took it to skoda dealers and they matched one with their set. Ordered it in for me. Think it cost me about 27 quid mate

With vat £31.52. This couple years back

Yeah thanks, I think that's about what they quoted me. Just gonna change for regular bolts now though I think
