Pretty sure most can have theirs reset without VCDS through some combination of button of presses.

 

was yours fixed or variable?

Found this on the internet but I believe this is only for 10k fixed servicing, variable servicing is a plug in job at the dealer, or anyone who has the required software and knows what they are doing. It seems odd the garage that serviced it didn't know how or have the software to do it though. If its on variable and someone set it back to fixed I think its a trip to the dealer to revert it back to variable.

Hold odometer reset down then turn on ignition, it comes up with option yea /no to reset
