Advice fuel filter change 1.6 CR Tdi

Featured Replies

Hi

Can anyone offer advice on changing a fuel filter on a Octavia 1.6 CR Tdi.

Just about to carry out a diy service and was hoping to change fuel filter but not changed one before.

Thank you

Be careful with it. Undo the 5 bolts. Very carefully lever the top of. I use a screwdriver through the top pipes to get some leverage.( I wouldn't recommend prising the top of with a screwdriver as if it bends it will leak diesel. Which potentially will get on the alternator drive belt and perish at an unbelievable fast rate and get stuck in the pulleys at possibly cause timing belt failure. ) Then pull out the old filter with a hook screwdriver. Then replace the filter and the seal. Lubricate the seal and very carefully put it back down together. Dry and clean everything. Now don't try and start it till you have bleed it as you could damage the common rail injection pump. You can do it with a mittyvac or vagcom. Once it's bleed you can start it up. Now make sure no leakage. Go around the block a few times re check for leaks. I personally would keep looking for leaks a fair few times until I'm satisfied it's not leaking. It's easy to pinch the seal and allow it to leak.

Thanks Flapperjack,

Can you explain the procedure of how to bleed the system once the filter has been replaced.

I have never seen it done before, sorry to be a nuisance.

If you fill the new filter with diesel prior to refitting it won't need bleeding. Any small amounts of air in the system will be purged.

I would agree, top up the filter housing. That's how I did the VRS and had no issues.

Thanks Cward,

Have you done one yourself. If so was it the same procedure as the CR engine. If I can get it done without the need to bleed the system then this would be good.

Thanks

Not on the Ocavia but done it on plenty of other common rail systems.

Iv just done a service on my octavia vrs cr engine and change fuel filter cause it was due, just unscrew torx screws lift fuel filter out. Put new filter under the top housing make sure it clips into place fill canister up about 75% and slowly put it back in watching the diesel goes to brim of canister screw it back down let the filter soak for 5mins then start the engine. No need for vcds if u fill canister to brim. Make sure to change seals as well.

Thanks for the advice. I will give it ago but still a bit nervous about it not starting. At least I know it can be done without vcds and so far no posts from any members who have had a problem changing the filter themselves.
