fabia vrs low voltage problem

Featured Replies

hi i have a problem with my fabia vrs the voltage is extremely low. it drops to 11.9. starts fine everytime. lights flicker its got to the point where i can't drive it at night. i get the ps steering come on and loose power steering after a while where i also get abs and tc light and handbrake light come on but go straight off. if i turn ignition off i get back the ps but would soon come on again especially at night. I've had battery tested at kiwk fit and is fine  a mate has tried 3 different alternators 1 reading to high then the other 2 the original 1 on the car was getting better volts. I've taken it to 2 garages now they both have said alternator which i told them that I've had 3 different 1s on there. i also mentioned  could it be the angle sensor but still said its the alternator. i said well try 1 yourself so they put 1 on there and said its fixed now. i took it down the road and is now actually worse. ps went within a couple of miles and then had battery light coming on which i didn't before. i suppose my question is would the angle sensor or pump cause voltage drops like that  or is there anything else i should be looking at?

The load sense wire is almost certainly broken near the plug by the gearbox. Do a search.

cheers told them about that. they have now said the alternator they put on  is faulty. will see what they say tomorrow when they put another on there and find it aint that.

Have you got a multimeter?

If not, borrow one, or buy one.

Then measure voltage (volts dc, 20V range) at the alternator output post where the thick wire attaches, with the negative probe on the body of the alternator (scratch through any corrosion to get to good clean metal). Do this with engine running, write down the number.  Do it with a cold engine so you have no chance that the radiator fan will start up while your hands are nearby.

If you find the voltage here is 14.5V or very close to it, that would confirm that there is nothing wrong with the alternator itself.

my multimeter is broke I've  been meaning to buy another. the garage have said that they tested the alternator they put on and they tested it off the car and it is faulty. iam  pretty sure though i see 1 of them or my mate put the multimeter on the alternator like you mention

Make sure the vehicle revs to more then 2500rpm as the voltage should then go to where it should be if the load sense wire is broken.

Usually a broken load sense wire will mean the battery light doesn't illuminate on the dash with the ignition.
