Strange fault with LED sidelights - 2016 Octy 3 vRS

Featured Replies

I fitted LED sideliht bulbs to my vRS a couple of days ago, and on next driving the car, got a warning message on the dash regarding the front-left sidelight, exactly as I'd expected.

Earlier today I followed the coding as per the below thread:

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/299424-octavia-iii-vcds-adaptations-tried-and-tested/page-2#entry4431164

The channels you need to change are:
(1)-Leuchte16BLK SLB35BLK SL KC9-Lasttyp 16 to 6 - LED Lichtmodul
(1)-Leuchte17TFL R BLK SRB3TFL R BLK SR KC3-Lasttyp 17 to 6 - LED Lichtmodul

Having completed this, I got the following error messages in my VCDS scan:

I reverted the code back to the original (having kept a very thorough log of all my changes), where the second fault disappeared, but the car seems confused as to which bulb is causing it an issue.

Having tried a couple of permutations (LED bulb/filament bulb) and the opposite coding, the car definitely tells that the 'rear left side turn signal' is faulty whenever the front left LED bulb is fitted - regardless of the coding.

I've also confirmed that both fault codes disappear if I replace the front left with a filament bulb but keep with the LED in the front right - with both codings set as appropriate, of course.

Any ideas on what I can try in order to use LED sidelights?

Thanks!

Email me an adaptation map of 09 as it was originally.

What happens if you swap the LED bulbs left to right - does the error then throw up on the right? You could have a faulty LED bulb - what have you purchased?

Are you clearing the error codes before making any coding changes, and the headlights are turned to OFF whenever you make any changes?

What version of VCDS and with which type of cable - HEX+CAN or Micro-CAN?

  • Author

Andy, what's your email address?

I have an adaptation map from before I started, and will also take one as it sits now after a number of changes - but with the sidelight coding back to original.

I havn't tried the bulbs the other way around - they are Halfords LED sidelights bought for my old S2000 around a year ago. Both still illuminate fine, but could have an error as you've said.

I cleared all codes before making changes, but believe the lights were in Auto - although it was daylight and I'd turned off DRLs in the MIB2 whilst doing so.

I'm using 15.7.4 (I think - the latest available on Ross-Tech anyway) and a HEX+CAN cable purchased about 3 weeks ago.

OK, thinking about it, an adaptation map won't help anyway.

Turn the lights to off, clear the codes then swap the bulbs left to right and see if the error follows the bulb - if it does I think you have your answer .....

I'd previously removed the LEDs and reset the adaptation, so started from fresh. With both LEDs fitted and no VCDS changes, the Maxidot tells me to 'Check front-left sidelight', and a VCDS fault code check shows:

I then turned the lights off, cleared the codes and swapped the bulbs - still no VCDS coding done at all...

I get exactly the same fault - Maxidot tells me to 'Check front-left sidelight', and a VCDS fault code check shows:

Andy - any ideas!? I'm very confused why the DTC I get refers to the 'Rear left side turn signal' - I read this as being the indicator bulb, and of course the rear of the car...

  • Author

For clarity, I cannot replicate the fault when the OEM filament bulbs are fitted as front sidelights, neither in Maxidot or a DTC.

It's your LED bulbs that are the problem.

The reason VCDS reports this as rear left is because more than one error is now tied to each specific error code, don't get hung up about it.

What happens if you put the bulbs in the number plate lights and code them for LED - do you get an error on those? They aren't CANBUS friendly LED's are they?

  • 1 year later...

@tomsimes did you ever get this sorted as am having exactly the same issue. I didn't do the coding myself but confident it has been done correctly.

I've tried two separate sets of led bulbs one osram one cheap eBay set so not sure it is a bulb issue.

  • 1 month later...

Finally sorted in case anyone reads this. Tried a third set of bulbs from another member which worked in their car and hey presto no error code.

I don't have a link to them but they looked like this:

I've got the same issue Just like tomsimes. I tried three different set of bulbs (Osram, Philips & "no name") with same result. The car (O3 MY2016) generates msg For not corect coding and, For not working rear turn lights. Pls advice!

My advice is just to turn them off using VCDS (or similar). They don’t illuminate like the eye lashes on the FL Octavia or Superb and don’t really offer any additional functionality over the LED strip. So just turn them off. That’s what I did on my pre-FL. Looks much better.

Quote the channels which I have to turn off.

Hello,

I have exact same problem with Osram and Philips led bulbs, for not working light and wrong coding.

Did anyone figured out if there is something different than 6 - LED Lichtmodul.

I have tried :

37 - allgemeine LED bis 12W

40 & 43 - allgemeine LED

45 - allgemeine LED bis 6W

Without success.

Strange thing is that original is 8 - allgemeine Gluhlampe 12W, but bulb is 5W.
