EGR Valve issues

Featured Replies

Hi - no, reasonably clean (but I do have Terracleans done reasonably regularly).   The valve was fixed in the Open position.

Can you post some pictures?

  • Blanking plate for under a tenner, easy fit on front of engine, then get someone to map out the EGR. Plenty of tuning companies will be able to disable the EGR (with or without a performance map).

We do a lot of them. Our FWD replacement time is down to less than 2 hours; dpf loosened, driveshaft off, leave the subframe on.

With the 4x4 once the props out and the rear exhaust section off you can work around the transfer unit, unbolt the N18 and away you go.

Hmmm

Not uncommon then?.

In that case, you're able to give a v good quote to supply and fit?.

Details from the garage are...

To gain access to the EGR Valve to even look at it :

- Remove subframe - steering rack - prop shaft

- Remove exhaust including DPF filter - o/s/f driveshaft

- Remove transfer box

All just to gain access to it !

And then of course the time required to rebuild all the items removed.

Absolute insanity :(

For reference, the part alone was £268.27 + VAT of £53.65   plus 6 gaskets totalling a further £30.

Can you post some pictures?

Sadly not, they had disposed of it before I asked for it.  Never crossed my mind before another forum member wanted one posted to look at lol.

Would they let you have it anyway?.

I seem to remember someone suggesting it's their 'trade in' and no longer belongs to you.

They're not exchange parts, skoda don't even want them back.

I've been replacing them since 2011, about 1 every 3 months, then 1 a month down to 1 a week when the new version started dopping the bearing pins out and now back to 1 every 3 months.

......and the quote?.

what for the cost of replacing them?

what for the cost of replacing them?

Yes

TBH I don't see the quotes and most are either covered entirely by skoda or have large good will contributions.

The last retail one I can remember was around £750.

Garage has had another search at their main depot and has retrieved it for me - as I mentioned that Skoda may wish to take a look at it after I write my letter to them.   I will take pics on Monday after I get it back from the garage. :)

Skoda quoted me £1035 plus VAT to do the work, hence took it to an independent garage.  Expensive fix in the garage yet it still saved me £300.

This was the garage where the original car was bought from new by the first owner... and serviced there... and then bought by me used ... and serviced there...

No goodwill gesture, nothing ... hence writing to the HQ shortly.

If you go to Skoda it will have a 2 year guarantee. Take it to James he can do them really fast

Take it where you like, the part carries a 2 year warranty regardless.

Giggles ...

I've got a 12 month / 12000 miles warranty as standard from the indepandent garage and they've said that is regardless of the part guarantee which might be longer.  They've said that they would deal with Skoda if it broke after the 12 months / 12,000 miles was up if it had a longer guarantee on the part :)

James you can do them quick. I recommend you.

If it fails whilst it's under parts warranty then any diag/repairs must be done by a skoda dealer.

Most indys will give you their 12 months warranty but genuine parts have 2 years.

Daft criteria and TPS don't tell you how much of a ball ache it can be to get a problem resolved when they do occur.

Thanks for the info James.   I shall bear that in mind if it goes wrong again (hopefully it wont).

Wish you were in my local Skoda garage!

Their response was "we have no capacity to take it in for 3 weeks" when I phoned them up for assistance when it went into Limp mode.  They weren't even prepared to read off the codes and advise me whether it was safe to drive more than the 2 miles to their garage.  I was bluntly told to go elsewhere and call breakdown assistance (aka Green Flag) and pay them to run the diagnostics and advise! This 'helpful' garage? Skoda in Swindon.

My normal garage that I've used for years is Newbury, and they are the ones that quoted £1035 + VAT to replace it... but that required a 35 mile drive to get the car there for them to look at it and sadly no courtesy car for a further week (understandable as cars get booked up for services etc).

Hence looked at other options re blanking off and remapping (noone was prepared to do this with my car) and then independent garages (most weren't interested as knew the 'pig' of a job it was to do!).

Was almost worth getting Green Flag to drag the car to my destination (telling them it was Rochdale!) hahaha.   I'll know in future ;)

Unfortunately some dealers are either after your money or an easy life. to keep face with customers you have to find and fix the worst issues imaginable, I don't think some dealers are capable of this hence they fob big jobs off with huge estimates or long waiting times.

It gives us all a bad name.

blackcatgirl - the service you got from Skoda Swindon was absolutely appalling.

I'd certainly write to Skoda UK and tell of them of your experience as well as the EGR issue.

Friend's son is service manager for a dealer in a large group and he says they have to be careful of the way they treat customers because they have to answer to the manufacturer's UK office if complaints are made or picked up from customer surveys.

Must admit to being surprised at this given some of the stories on this and other forums when folks have problems and get little help from the UK office. Seems they have double standards!

Out here the best dealerships (or the importer) pay people to survey their customers for feedback on all aspects of the ownership experience.

My Yeti came from Australia's nr1 Skoda dealership, I've since found out.......I agreed with the rating.

We were voted number 1 dealer last year, I can't help but think it's because there's people like me who work here and actually give a **** about how we are perceived in the public eye and how our customers feel.

Hence me contributing on a public forum with my name and company as my username, I've nothing to hide.

If they are like my Skoda dealer then it's because they only have one Technician in this week. A ten ramp dealership with one fella working .....Ridiculous. I done it for 24 year's then realised I could get the same pay at a small friendly garage. The guy I work for now is the most honest person I have ever met in the motor industry. It's a refreshing change doing the work that's required and not trying to sell work to meet ridiculous targets imposed by a big company. Btw £1000 plus vat sounds right at the dealer's.

  • 3 weeks later...

The saga continues...

I now have

1) Oil leak feed to Turbo

2) Oil leak in return from Turbo

3) Rattling heat shield on exhaust manifold (?) directly above the EGR valve unit

Trying to get the independant garage to respond to me regarding fixing these under their labour warranty.    Ho hum..  else it is yet another £600 for another garage to rectify these silly issues.

Am I plain unlucky, or are mechanics/ garages getting worse over the years?!
